ACTIVITY PLAN

IDENTIFICATION AND ACTIVITY INFORMATION

Instructor: Date:
Glenndon Whitaker April 14th, 2019

Activity Title: Subject/Topic of Instruction:

Making your robot doing something over and over Programming using the Loop block
again….
Lesson Overview: Suggested Time:

During this activity the students will learn about 1 Lego League Team meeting
the Loop block and be introduced to the logic of Content Standards:
using it.
Core values of FIRST:
Using the GenBot they will experiment with the https://www.firstinspires.org/robotics/fll/core-values
loop block and show the class what kinds of
things they can make it do. Materials and Resources:

1. Lego Mindstorms EV3 for Education

2. Computer/tablet with Lego programming
software
3. Overhead projector

Learning Objective: References:

The Lego League Club member will program the 1. Week 3 Robot Assembly Instructions by
Lego EV3 robot using the Loop Block. Glenndon Whitaker

Assessment Plan:

At the end of the meeting, each team member will demonstrate their understanding by showing their
programming and results to the group.
IMPORTANT ASSEMBLING/PROGRAMMING INSTRUCTIONS Time Notes

1. All team members will build the GenBot

https://roboticscourse.weebly.com/robot-assembly.html

2. The team members will be using the Loop Block, seen below. Within
the block they can use whatever programming they wish to make the
robot do something.
3. There are a lot of options for the kids to explore in the Loop Block,
make sure you take a look and understand what options are available.

COMPUTATIONAL COMPONENTS AND STUDENT ACTIVITIES Time Notes

The activity will follow this order:

1. Introduction
2. Robot Build
3. Explanation of major concepts
4. Coach demonstration
5. Student practical
6. Student demonstrations
7. Conclusion
INTRODUCTION Time Notes
What… are they going to learn?
During this activity we will be going over using the Loop Block. This will allow 5
you to program the robot to do repetitive programming without having to repeat mins
the other blocks.

Why… is this important?

Learning how to use the Loop Block will introduce you all to some basic
programming skills. Using this block will clean up your programming and
introduce you to some programming logic.

Where... will they apply this information?

As you start using more sensors and want the robot to do various tasks, you
may require it to run blocks of programming over and over again. In order not
to have to program countless blocks, you will use the Loop Block.

When… can they use this information?

You can use this information right away with many of the programs you will be
creating.

Control statement and evaluation details

Please pay attention and be respectful to your team mates. There will be a
little listening to me, and lots of time to use the robots and figure things out for
yourselves.

At the end you will all demonstrate what you have learned to the group, so
work hard and have fun!

Activity 1: Robot Build Time Notes

Introduction
60 See the EV3 software
Students will build the GenBot mins or my own personal
assembling instructions

Body

1. Split the children into equal sized groups, the size depending on how
many robot kits you have available
2. Use the presentation to create a GenBot on an overhead projector and
use it for the children to follow along with. Answer questions as
required.
Activity Confirmation

Take a look at all the robots, look for any major issues

Activity 2: Explanation of Major Concepts and Demo Time Notes

Introduction
15
Using the overhead projector, you will show them a quick program using the mins
Loop Block.

Body

1. Drag out the Loop Block. Show the kids how you can increase it in
size.
2. Drag out another block and show them how you can place the block
inside the Loop. Suggest you use a simple Move Tank Block. Example
below has the robot move forward for 3 seconds, and turn.
3. Show them the Loop Block menu and all the options available
4. Explain the logic of how the programming will work
5. Upload the program and show a robot in action

Activity 3: Student Practical/Demo Time Notes

Introduction
30
Students try programming using a Loop Block. mins

Body

Let everyone try to program. Give them instructions to use their imaginations
and to make two or three programs that use the Loop Block in different ways.

Activity Confirmation
5
Have each group demonstrate their programs. Make it fun! See what they mins
have come up with.
Conclusion Time Action
Summary of what they learned
5
Today we learned about using the Loop Block. You practiced programming the mins
robot to repeat other blocks.

Restatement Of Why (From Introduction)

Learning how to use the Loop Block will introduce you all to some basic
programming skills. Using this block will clean up your programming and
introduce you to some programming logic.

Remotivation

Remember, Lego League isn’t just about winning, but learning and following
the core values of FIRST. As long as we are working hard and having fun, we
are well on our way.

Overview of next lesson

In our next meeting, we are going to learn to use the ultra-sonic sensor so that
the robots don’t crash into walls!
