2019 REGIONAL
TOURNAMENT
Welcome
To the DC Muslim Interscholastic Tournament, the annual
event where the youth of the greater DC area showcases
exceptional talent and even more exceptional character.
In the age of social media, flaunting our lives online can
be a source of success. Even when we intend to spread
positivity through gaining popularity, we may see humility
as an obstacle to that goal. How do we inculcate the vir-
tue of humility when it seemingly brings us down? If we’ve
learned that humility is a weakness, then this shortsighted
understanding veils us from its possible hidden strength.
Prophet Muhammad, peace be upon him, once said, “…no
one humbles themselves for the sake of God except that
God raises their status” (Muslim).

The stories of the Prophets (peace be upon them all) of Islam provide many of
examples of what it takes to be a leader. In Islam, a leader has an obligation
to lead with integrity and justice. Leadership is a trust when it is given. This
workshop will dive into the story of our Prophet (peace be upon him) and
show how he practiced humility in his daily life as a leader.
In the midst of all the hype and high energy at MIST, this is your opportunity to
take a step back and take a moment to yourself to debrief in this year’s quiet
room! If you need a minute to prepare for a competition or even a moment of
solitude, you have the opportunity to do so in the quiet room.

The Treaty of Hudaybiyah Building II - 2052
Athman Jilo
The power of calligraphy resonates throughout Islam’s history since its incep-
tion and has even shaped Islamic perceptions of art and beauty. Through this
proportionate and geometric form of writing, calligraphy has evoked the idea
of harmony within all of God’s creation and can even depict concepts such as
honor and humility in very abstract ways. Join us as we reawaken this ancient
form of art by learning about its history, what tools are used and how they are
made, and about the different scripts. Come learn the basics with hands on
experience that can guide you to beginning your own journey of mastering
this traditional art!
Nicole Fauster
You’re 24 hours behind on an assignment that was due 72 hours ago, you have
to be at work in five minutes and your ETA is 25, plus you’re running on four
hours of sleep because you spent all last night volunteering at your community.
Have you ever just looked up one day and wondered: “how did I get here?” Join
Qalam Institute graduate and Georgetown Law student Nicole Fauster as she
dives into the implicit attitudes and subconscious decisions that drive us when
we forget why we do what we do, and how we can channel our focus to be
more conscious about the direction of our lives with an eye on the hereafter.
As I Am Building II - 3032

From corporate America, to university campuses, to maybe even your own
community, join her as she leads a vibrant discussion about what it means to
be unapologetically yourself in spaces that just don’t seem to have enough
space for you.

A Life’s Work: Finding the Path to Passion Building II - 3032
Zaytuna College
What do I want to do with my life? Although Islam provides moral guidance
and spiritual principles for living, we are still left with the decision on what
we want to study, learn, and eventually work on as a career. Community and
family pressures may push us towards certain fields, while societal trends pull
us in other directions. How do we narrow down the seemingly endless list
of possible careers into one path that we can pursue? How do we know that
the path that we choose will work out for us? Join Imran Ghani from Zaytuna
College who will explore these questions and more.
Sumayyah Taufique
In this workshop, we will collectively explore self care, community care and
resilience. Some of the questions that will guide our discussion will be: What
is the difference between self care, community care and stress management?
And what does resilience feel/sound/look like? This workshop will be discus-
sion-based, interactive and meant to draw out ideas, thoughts and opinions
on self care, resilience and identity. Ultimately, it’s important to understand
what we can do as individuals to help build a strong foundation for today and
tomorrow’s youth.

Representation matters. For too long, people have told stories of others, with-
out actually knowing what their lived experiences are. No more: it’s time for us
to take control of our own narratives. Join Rawan Elbaba, a Digital Associate
Producer at PBS NewsHour as she shares why creating our platforms, finding
our voices, and sharing our narratives is essential to shaping our identities and
living authentically.

Abrar Omeish
“Humble politician” seems like an oxymoron, but that’s where Abrar Omeish
comes in. Running as a candidate for the Fairfax County School Board, Abrar
is charged with the responsibility of advocating on behalf of herself and her
community to ensure that education is equitable and enriching for all young
people in Fairfax County. This enlightening workshop will focus on how
humility takes the conversation from personalities to policies, from
rhetoric to results, and from soundbites to service.
Yasmin Elhady
How you treat yourself when you reflect on your flaws, mistakes or inade-
quacies? Do you tend to be more accepting and forgiving or more harsh on
yourself? What is the difference between self-love and narcissism? How do you
maintain humility while loving yourself? Where do you draw the line between
narcissism and self-love? Join relationship guru Yasmin (@yasguru) in this
interactive discussion.
Jose Acevedo
Empathy, humility, compassion, and mercy are often concepts that are left
out of the discussion of social justice. Does humility allow you to better un-
derstand how someone could have justice administered fairly? How can we
advocate and establish justice, while still embodying mercy? Come join us in
this workshop as we take lessons from Islamic history and learn how to center
mercy and humility in our fight for justice.
