discovering dignity in challEnging pride

2019 REGIONAL
TOURNAMENT
Welcome
To the DC Muslim Interscholastic Tournament, the annual
event where the youth of the greater DC area showcases
exceptional talent and even more exceptional character.
In the age of social media, flaunting our lives online can
be a source of success. Even when we intend to spread
positivity through gaining popularity, we may see humility
as an obstacle to that goal. How do we inculcate the vir-
tue of humility when it seemingly brings us down? If we’ve
learned that humility is a weakness, then this shortsighted
understanding veils us from its possible hidden strength.
Prophet Muhammad, peace be upon him, once said, “…no
one humbles themselves for the sake of God except that
God raises their status” (Muslim).

We challenge you to take a deeper look and analyze the

various concepts surrounding this theme. There will be a
collection of the finest submissions in a variety of compe-
titions as participants encapsulate this year’s theme, The
Honor of Humility: Discovering Dignity in Challenging Pride.

We look forward to seeing what the competitors have to

offer and we hope that you enjoy your weekends as much
as we will!

Athman Jilo
“Substantial research shows that humility predicts effective leadership. Hu-
mility is associated with minimizing status differences, listening to subordi-
nates, soliciting input, admitting mistakes and being willing to change course
when a plan seems not to work.”
- Karen HigginBottom

The stories of the Prophets (peace be upon them all) of Islam provide many of
examples of what it takes to be a leader. In Islam, a leader has an obligation
to lead with integrity and justice. Leadership is a trust when it is given. This
workshop will dive into the story of our Prophet (peace be upon him) and
show how he practiced humility in his daily life as a leader.

The Humble Hand Building II - 1032
Zineb H. Chaklader
The power of calligraphy resonates throughout Islam’s history since its incep-
tion and has even shaped Islamic perceptions of art and beauty. Through this
proportionate and geometric form of writing, calligraphy has evoked the idea
of harmony within all of God’s creation and can even depict concepts such as
honor and humility in very abstract ways. Join us as we reawaken this ancient
form of art by learning about its history, what tools are used and how they are
made, and about the different scripts. Come learn the basics with hands on
experience that can guide you to beginning your own journey of mastering
this traditional art!

Quiet Room Building II - 3052

Eyes Toward the Earth, Vision Toward Building II - 3062

the Heavens
Sabri BenKahla
Allah (swt) often refers to faith in the Qur’an using the imagery of plant life &
how it must exist within the proper conditions and receive the proper nourish-
ment in order for it to grow. Just as a plant cannot come about without first be-
ing a seed, and just as a seed cannot grow without first being buried within soil,
we cannot grow as people without first humbling ourselves within the correct
environment. The Prophet (pbuh) said: “Whoever humbles themself before God,
God elevates them.” Join this eye opening workshop as we discuss remaining
grounded in humility in an age of relentless self promotion & baseless
narcissism with our esteemed teacher Sabri BenKahla.

Mask Activity
Imagine all the servers in the world went down. All your social media accounts,
inaccessible. Your phone, disconnected. Radio, static. TV, static. Life, seemingly on
hold. But is it? Imagine the only voice you had to confront in your mind, beyond
the social pressure, beyond the expectations, beyond the disappointments...was
your own. What would it say?

Now picture your greatest dreams and aspirations. Picture your ideal self... your
future home, your future life, you doing the most meaningful thing you could be
doing. What’s holding you back? Is it fear? Is it your circumstances? Most
importantly, can it be overcome? How do you turn failure into fire, disaster
into fuel, pain into passion?

Join us for an interactive discussion and activity that gets us beyond the
perceptions and into the reality of who we are and what we mean to others.

The Journey for Relief: Stories From Building II - 2052

Refugees Camps
Helping Hand for Relief & Development
Millions scattered and displaced. Millions without food or shelter. Millions
affected by war and persecution. The issues are endless and numbers are
growing. As our lives continue on, it becomes increasingly difficult to remain
connected to the plight of humanity around the world. It is important for us to
maintain perspective and remember that while Allah tests some with poverty
and hardship, He tests others with privilege and wealth. Allah tells us in the
Quran in Surah 11, verse 23 “Indeed, they who have believed and done righteous
deeds and humbled themselves to their Lord – those are the companions of
Paradise; they will abide eternally therein”. Join us in this workshop to discuss
the realities of the world around us and hear stories from refugees we had the
honor of meeting.

ible? How can I stand out without putting myself above others? In this session

The Abaser. Join us as we explore how God’s divine attributes transform us, al-

A Life’s Work: Finding the Path to Passion Building II - 3032

Zaytuna College
What do I want to do with my life? Although Islam provides moral guidance
and spiritual principles for living, we are still left with the decision on what
we want to study, learn, and eventually work on as a career. Community and
family pressures may push us towards certain fields, while societal trends pull
us in other directions. How do we narrow down the seemingly endless list
of possible careers into one path that we can pursue? How do we know that
the path that we choose will work out for us? Join Imran Ghani from Zaytuna
College who will explore these questions and more.

Fostering Resilience in Wellness Building II - 3062

Sumayyah Taufique
In this workshop, we will collectively explore self care, community care and
resilience. Some of the questions that will guide our discussion will be: What
is the difference between self care, community care and stress management?
And what does resilience feel/sound/look like? This workshop will be discus-
sion-based, interactive and meant to draw out ideas, thoughts and opinions
on self care, resilience and identity. Ultimately, it’s important to understand
what we can do as individuals to help build a strong foundation for today and
tomorrow’s youth.

Why It Matters: Islamophobia & Storytelling Building II - 3012

Sabrina Sheikh
This session will dive deeper into understanding structural and institutional
Islamophobia and its broader positioning under the pillars of white suprema-
cy. As well as understanding the scope of the War on Terror and the laws and
policies post 9/11 that feed into structural and institutional Islamophobia. You
will be able to understand the power of storytelling and how it can be used to
create social change in laws and policies today.

The Power of Humility Ballroom

Shaykha Ieasha Prime

Achieving a state of humility is tough. When life feels like smooth sailing, our
egos grow a little, but when faced with hardships, we feel entitled to relief. It
can feel as though being in a state of humility in either scenario means taking
away from our own self-worth, reality, or truth. So why is striving for humility
mentioned repeatedly in the Qur’an? How do we practically achieve humility?
When is it worth showing our humility, and how can we be honest with our-
selves when being humble? Join Ieasha Prime in this discussion as he helps us
understand the essence of humility from the Islamic worldview.
