Iontophoresis

by
Faisal Mehboob
Introduction
Introduction of ions into the body tissue through
the patient's skin.
PRINCIPLE...
(Place the ions under the electrodes with the same
charge, i.e negative ions place under the cathode , and
positive ions under the anode.
 leDuc1903 proposed it first time.
Electrodes
• Electrodes under which the ions are placed are
called as 'active electrodes'
• less size ->more current density-> more ion will
transfer
• more size ->dec current density -> less ions will be
transferred.
Current
• current used in this technique is 'constant
direct current' because it ensures the
unidirectional flow of the electrical current.
• low intensity current are more effective
• intensity range is 5-12mA
• duration for treatment is about 15-20min.
Advantages Disadvantage

• Painless • The most common

• Sterile advantage of the
Iontophoresis is
• Noninvasive method
to introduce the ( Chemical burn )
medications and reason for it is,
application of constant
direct current.
Methods of Treatment
1. skin should be clean
2. Electrodes must have proper contact with skin
3. If ions are applied in form of ointment , a layer of it to
be applied.
4. If ions are applied in form of a solution, lint pad of
absorbent material is used.
5. Appropriate ions are used for specific condition
6. Intensity of current and duration of treatment must be
regulated appropriately.
7. use talcum powder if erythema is seen after
treatment.
Commonly used Commonly used
positive ions negative ions
Hydrocortisone Iodine
calcium chloride Chlorine
zinc oxide Salicylic acid
magnesium oxide sodium or potassium
dexamethasone citrate
Safety and Precautions

Anticholinergic compounds usually causes atropine

like effects, in which patient may feel
(drying of mouth and throat).
Management of Hyperhidrosis

• Hyperhidrosis (excessive sweating)

• It can be overcome by using
Tap water
Glycopyronium bromide
