N479 Leadership Management Shadowing Activity Form

Your Name: Lauren Gray Date of Activity: 03/29/19 Faculty name: Rajni Patel

Who did you shadow (add their credentials too):

I shadowed Evelyn Fisher, RN (BSN). Her license number is RN065717. Evelyn is a charge

nurse.

Role of this leader and where do they practice? (Be specific):

Evelyn is one of three nurses that switch off performing the charge nurse role during days on unit

420 (Post Acute Care Unit) at Tucson Medical Center. Evelyn is the charge nurse once or twice

each week. As charge nurse, Evelyn oversees the unit including patients, staff, and

supplies/equipment. In the morning she receives report on all of the patients on the unit from the

charge nurse from the previous night. Then once all the day staff have arrived at 0700, she is in

charge of the morning huddle. After that, she makes rounds on all the patients and checks in on

all the nurses to see if they need help with anything. She also checks that the code cart and other

supplies or inventory are in order. Throughout the day she keeps in touch with all the nurses and

staff with any updates on patients or if they need any help. If a rapid response, code, or other

circumstance arises, she plays a leadership role in the situation. Additionally, she prepares nurse

assignments to patients for the next on-coming shift. She then meets with the house supervisor

and charge nurses from other units to determine if there is a need for more staff for the next shift.

After discussion, she will then call nurses to see if they will come in or request float nurses if the

unit is short staff.

Discuss the benefit and value of this experience to you (Be specific):

This experience benefited me by teaching me how to be a respectable charge nurse and leader.

This experience showed me how to be a great leader beyond what talking about it in class was

able to teach me. I was able to see how important team work, communication, attentiveness,

critical thinking, organization, and a good relationship with staff is to be a good charge nurse and

leader. I value this experience because someday I hope to be a charge nurse and I will think back

to this experience to guide me when I first start off.

Would you recommend this specific shadowing experience in the future; why or why not?

(Describe why or why not):

I recommend this specific shadowing experience in the future because it allowed me to tie what I

learned in class about being a charge nurse to real clinical practice. Additionally, the experience

is important even if I do not become a charge nurse someday because it is good to understand

what your leaders or supervisors do. Future students are likely to receive the same valuable

experience and lessons I received.
