Sheath testing – what for?

The cable sheath (Jacket) protects the cable

against influences from the outside.
Due to damage, water or humidity can enter
The ageing of the cable is accelerated
Result is a growing damage and - in the long
run the loss of the cable

Therefore:
Regular sheath tests and immediate repair of faulty areas
ensure the value and functionality of the cable system

Test protocol

 After completing the cable test, a

report file can be written to an
USB Stick
 The report can be stored and
printed using the EasyProt
software on a standard PC
 The appearance of the report can
be adapted according to the
customer’s requirements

Pre location – Methods

 HV – Measuring bridge
- Balance of the bridge
- Good connection between bridge and cable (contact resistance)
- Equal resistance faulty and auxiliary line (two point connection)

 Voltage drop method

- Relation of the voltage drop in front and behind the fault

Pin pointing – Step voltage method

Advantages of the DC step voltage method

 NO wrong measurement by capacitive coupling

 NO interferences by 50 Hz and short switches pulses
 NO change of the fault point by the location method itself

Disadvantages of the DC step voltage method

 Lower sensitivity
 External voltages in the soil must be newly compensated in each case
responsible they limit the amplification
 In case of the presence of several faults, highly resistive faults
will not spark over and the sensitivity will decrease

Pin pointing – Step voltage method

Pin pointing with surge – step voltage method

Advantages of the surge step voltage method

 High sensitivity
 No interferences by external direct voltages
 Highly resistive faults will spark over
 A lower loss of sensitivity in case of several faults

Disadvantages of the surge step voltage method

 Wrong measurement by capacitive couplings are possible

 50 Hz interferences can overdrive the amplifier
 Changes at the fault point, caused by a too high surge energy,
may accour
ATTANTION:
High surge energy can produce a high step voltage !!!
