Lesson Title: Three Little Pigs STEM Challenge Level:
1,2, or 3
Lesson
Content Areas: math, science, technology (including engineering) Duration:
60 min.
Project Summary: Using the design process, students will work in collaborative groups to design and
build a house that will withstand the force of air that mimics the Big Bad Wolf’s huffing and puffing.
Straws, yarn, masking tape, Scotch tape, paper clips, paper Dixie cups,
Materials: popsicle sticks, paper, construction paper, cupcake cups
Scissors, rulers
Resources
Three Little Pigs STEM Challenge handout
Handout or Graphic Sketching paper
Organizer Pencils

how the shape of an object helps it function as needed to solve
a given problem.
Content Standard(s):

a situation people want to change to define a simple problem
that can be solved through the development of a new or
improved object or tool.

includes specified criteria for success and constraints on materials, time, or

the problem.
Lesson Procedures
Lesson Introduction: **Steps will be given on a personal sheet as well as a large chart in the class so
that students have visual reinforcements “Today we’re architects building houses for the three little
pigs. Your houses have to be able to stand up to the big bad wolf not once, but two times! You will
have 5 minutes to sketch your design, and 15 minutes to implement it. Then we will test it as a class.
You will make note of two ways you may improve it, you will have 10 minutes to rebuild and
reconstruct and then we will test again. Throughout this project, you and your teammates should
document two instances that stick out to you and propel your work. These are two developmental
instances that are a point of growth as a team or within your design. This will be recorded and
documented on Flipgrid. Lastly, we will finish the project with a class wide discussion on mentimeter.”
