IMPROVEMENT OF CLASSROOM CLEANLINESS AND DISCIPLINE THROUGH THE
UTILIZATION OF MONITORING TOOL

Chapter 1

Introduction

a. Context and Rationale

“Cleanliness and discipline are not matters of instinct; they

are matters of education, and like many most great things, you

must cultivate a taste for them. “ This is what the famous Prime

Minister of the United Kingdom said and really, it is. The public

school system particularly Senior High School adheres to the

Universal Declaration of Human Rights which is related to the

Philippine 1987 Constitution about protecting and promoting the

right of all citizens of the country to quality education and to make

appropriate steps to make it sure that it is accessible to all. This

would mean that with the increasing fees imposed by the private

schools and some other related matters, staggering volume of

students enroll and transfer to public schools. An increase of

students would also mean increase in multiple behaviors which

teachers deal with every school day. As students increase per

classroom, monitoring of cleanliness and student conduct takes a

great deal of effort especially to the monitors of the class. For one,

teachers include the monitoring of the classroom cleanliness in

IMPROVEMENT OF CLASSROOM CLEANLINESS AND DISCIPLINE THROUGH THE
UTILIZATION OF MONITORING TOOL

their routine activities which takes up around five to 15 minutes. If

need be, teachers forced students to clean the classroom and take

away the trash first before starting with the lesson. In some worst

teaching moments, misbehaving students are being sent to the

guidance immediately or asked to move out of the room for a

couple of minutes which disrupts the teacher’s instruction time and

the students’ learning hour.

With the use of the monitoring tool, the students would be

aware that they are closely monitored when it comes to them

maintaining the cleanliness of the classroom and their conduct

including their attendance in all their subjects. This monitoring tool

is being sent to the guidance office on a daily basis which would

create a report for the immediate dissemination of the parties

involved (property custodian for classroom cleanliness and parents

and/or advisers for student’s conduct).

This action research would be a very important helping tool

for all the stakeholders of the school as the tool will immediately

recognize the problem of the cleanliness of the class in general and

a student behavior and conduct in particular. With this monitoring

tool be linked into the database of the property custodian and the

guidance office, improvement of classroom cleanliness and

discipline is no longer a notion or a theoretical dream but a realistic

expectation, achievable and with concrete evidences.

b. Action Research Questions

The main goal of this study was to determine the

improvement of classroom cleanliness and discipline through the

utilization of monitoring tool.

Specifically, this study attempted to answer the following

questions:

1. What are the improvements of classroom cleanliness and

discipline through the utilization of monitoring tool?

2. What are the perceptions of the respondents towards the

monitoring tool?

3. What are experiences of the respondents on the utilization of

monitoring tool?

UTILIZATION OF MONITORING TOOL

c. Innovation, Intervention, and Strategy

Innovation

Researchers improved the monitoring tool through making

this autonomous where class monitors need not have to present

the mechanism at the end of each session but to place the tool in a

conspicuous area where the subject teachers shall accomplish the

device in two minutes. This unburdens the load of the secretary or

class monitor and additional instruction time was gained by the

teachers once the tool was established. End of the month awarding

shall be implemented to commend the classes which were

consistent in keeping their classroom clean and disciplined.

Intervention

Cleanliness Time Check The Las Piňas City National Senior

High School – Doňa Josefa Campus maintains its cleanliness

considering the two-minute time check. Small actions like checking

trash bins and reminding the students to throw garbage properly

can lead to big results.

Green Clean School By the healthy school campaign adopt

cleaning programs that encouraged students the use of green

products (avoid use of plastics) equipment and practices in school.

Positive Reward Monthly awarding program recognizing the

cleanest classroom and most discipline class established positive

feedback to the students and teachers.

Cleanliness Officer The cleanliness officer tasked to check

the daily cleanliness of the class and frequently reminded the

assigned cleaners of the day. This made them more responsible

and reflective of their own actions.

Class Monitor The class monitor helped monitoring the

cleanliness and daily attendance through writing updated data in

the monitoring form. This established updated data on student’s

daily attendance report. Likewise the student’s positive and

negative behaviors were written by the subject teachers.

Daily Attendance Report This served as basis of the class

advisers, subject teachers and the prefect of the students for both

academic and behavioral concerns.

Strategy

Device The researcher’s planned to improved classroom

cleanliness and discipline through the utilization of monitoring tool.

Carry-out The monitoring tool was administered to the grade

11 students. The assigned class monitor was responsible in

checking and recording the data needed. The monitoring form

signed by the class advisers and submitted to the prefect of the

students.

Look back The remarks and all other information written in

the monitoring form served as reflections for the class advisers and

student.

Action Research Method

This chapter presents the method used in the conduct of the

study. This included the participants, data gathering prcedure with

scope and limitation, and plans, dissemination and utilization.

a. Participants and Other sources of Data and Information

There were 12 sections in the grade 11 with a maximum

class size of 50 students at Las Piňas City National Senior High

School - Doňa Josefa Campus. Out of 12 sections, the sections

Philosopher, Broadcaster, Lawyer, Espresso, Bill Gates, and

Zuckerberg were chosen using convenience sampling.

Convenience samplings were considered and used in selecting the

sample since the schedule of the classes were convenient to the

researchers and to the availability of the observers.

b. Data Gathering Methods with Scope and Limitation

This study aimed to determine the improvement of

classroom cleanliness and discipline through the utilization of

monitoring tool using qualitative design. It employed descriptive

method.

The data gathering procedure involved three phases. The

first phase was the development and validation of the research

instruments. The second phase was the orientation and actual

instruction of using the monitoring tool. This lasted for 2 weeks.

Third, the interview questionnaire was administered to the assigned

class monitors.

c. Related Literature

Use of ATP tool as a tool for monitoring cleanliness

The Department of Health’s from deep clean to keep clean

document (2008) highlighted a Which? Report published in 2007,

which indicated that;

‘One of the clearest signals to a patient that they will be cared for is

the attention paid to the cleanliness of their wards and bathroom

facilities.’

Patients and the public tend to use cleanliness as an

indicator for general quality. (DOH; 2008).To ensure NHS Scotland

Healthcare Facilities are of a standard of cleanliness which

UTILIZATION OF MONITORING TOOL

14

optimizes public and patient confidence, it is important that robust

mechanisms in place to establish maintain and monitor cleanliness.

ATP bioluminescence is used extensively in the food

industry as a tool for monitoring and maintaining cleanliness. There

remains some debate around the ability of ATP bioluminescence to

be used as a reliable cleanliness monitoring tool within healthcare

premises, particularly as ATP is a measurement of organic matter

rather than microbial contamination, and there is no direct link

between ATP results, visual cleanliness and microbial

contamination. In April 2009, Health Facilities Scotland’s Domestic

Services Advisory Group established a sub group to investigate

ATP monitoring within NHS Scotland.

The cleanliness of schools is also an important aspect of

school environments. Clean schools not only lower the threat of the

spread of illness, but also convey a caring message to the students

and teachers. Cleaning and maintenance of schools is vitally

important and is often underemphasized and underperformed.

Students feel better going to clean classes and sitting in clean

desks and surroundings.
