NARRATIVE REPORT ON THE SCHOOL LAC SESSION

(ENRICHING LEARNER’S VOCABULARY THROUGH VOCABULARY WORD MAP
STRATEGY)

Vocabulary is a person's own knowledge of words. It is not really necessary to anyone to be a just
a language user and it is really very useful to have a good vocabulary for the reason, that today we
can't keep up without any good treasury of words in our minds. Indeed, enriched vocabulary can give
someone of numerous benefits. Good vocabulary range increasing reading comprehension, improve
communication skills and help improve personal life, social life and career life.
There are various strategies on how to enrich vocabulary of a certain learner. One of this is using
the word map. The word map is a reading strategy that can be used in order to help pupils to create a
schema (similar to a filing cabinet in the brain in which learners can connect the new knowledge to the
old) for the new words they are going to encounter in reading. This strategy provides students with the
opportunity to make visual and semantic connections. The more connections that the learners are able
to create, the more likely they will remember the new words. By doing this, it gives more meaning to
learning the vocabulary word, and this would help struggling readers tremendously.
The school head and teachers of Parang Elementary School held a SLAC session on the Action
Research last February 22, 2019 which is about Using Word Map Strategy in Enriching Learner’s
Vocabulary. The session started with a prayer, followed by an oral drill through tongue twister. The
speaker, Mrs. Susan T. Ramos welcomes all the participants. She began her topic by asking each
teacher to share their problems regarding teaching vocabulary among their learners. After the sharing,
Mrs. Ramos, presented her topic which is Enriching Learner’s Vocabulary through Vocabulary Word
Map Strategy. She emphasized the importance of using Word Map Strategy to develop learner’s
vocabulary. After the discussion, the speaker had a simple demonstration teaching using the said
strategy. And later the group had a workshop on using Word Map Strategy in enriching learner’s
vocabulary through group activity.

They called it a day after the open forum by the educators and the speakers. The LAC Session
ended at exactly 5:00 PM.
