Lesson Title Quiz Day Date March 19, 2019

Subject/Grade Level Mathematics 20-1 Time Duration 75 Minutes

Unit Quadratic Equations Teacher Samantha Beyak

Lesson Overview Students will complete a quiz that focuses on quadratic equations, and everything
in this unit up to this point including factoring, graphing and word problems. The
quiz is developed to take less than allotted class time, but should students need
it, it is available.

General Learning GLO - Develop algebraic and graphical reasoning through the study of relations.
Outcomes
Specific Learning 1. Factor polynomial expressions of the form:
Outcomes  𝑎𝑥 2 + 𝑏𝑥 + 𝑐, 𝑎 ≠ 0
 𝑎2 𝑥 2 − 𝑏 2 𝑦 2 , 𝑎 ≠ 0, 𝑏 ≠ 0
2
 𝑎(𝑓(𝑥)) + 𝑏(𝑓(𝑥)) + 𝑐, 𝑎 ≠ 0
2 2
 𝑎2 (𝑓(𝑥)) − 𝑏 2 (𝑔(𝑦)) , 𝑎 ≠ 0, 𝑏 ≠ 0
where a, b and c are rational numbers.
[CN, ME, R]
4. Analyze quadratic functions of the form y = ax2 + bx + c to identify
characteristics of the corresponding graph, including:
 vertex
 domain and range
 direction of opening
 axis of symmetry
 x- and y-intercepts and to solve problems.
[CN, PS, R, T, V]
Main Inquiry  How can we use quadratic equations in order to find out important information?
Questions
Guiding Questions  Why do we want equations equal to zero?
 How can two equations be different yet come out with the same answer.

Students will:
 utilize all concepts learned up to this point and show understanding by using that knowledge on
the quiz.

Formative Homework checks.

Assessment
Summative Quad Equations Quiz.
Assessment
Resources McGraw-Hill Ryerson Pre-Calculus 11
 textbook and teacher’s resource.
Materials Writing utensils, calculator, quiz.
Speed Dating Worksheets

Prior to Lesson Develop quiz/answer key.

Print quizzes for each student.
Develop ‘speed dating’ worksheet.

Introduction - 5 Mins
At the start of the class, I’ll have the students quickly show me their homework for homework checks
before moving onto review for the quiz.
Assessment of Prior N/A
Knowledge
Transition to Body I’ll introduce the speed dating activity to the students and how its going to work.
Body - 69 Mins
Learning Activity Speed Dating Review – 15 Minutes
The desks will be set up in 2 rows, in pairs, enough for the class to be split in
half. Each pair of desks will have a work sheet and a pen. The worksheet consists
of 10 questions that students have seen prior to the quiz. Students will be given
one minute (per question), to work as pairs, to complete each question starting
at 1 and ending at 10. Once the minute is up, each student will leave the paper
and pen, stand up, and rotate clockwise to a new desk, a new partner and a new
worksheet. All the worksheets will be the same, but keeping the worksheet at
the desk maintains there will always be one available. After 10 minutes, and 10
questions, the students should have worked with multiple people, and discussed
multiple different types of questions. This activity is designed for them to
discuss and learn from each other. It is not about finishing each question.
Quiz Time – 54 Minutes
Following the review activity, the students will be given the quiz, and the
remaining time of class to work on it.
Teacher Notes: Assessment will be taken after the quiz is completed.
Assessments/
Differentiation
Closure - 1 Mins
End of Lesson Those quizzes still not collected will be collected, and students are free to go.
They will be reminded of tutorials for extra assistance.
