5 EARTHQUAKE LOAD
[As prer IBC 2006 & ASCE 7 - 05]

Effective seismic weight of the structure, W = 257 kN

5.5.1 Seismic design parameters:

Site class………………………………………………………………. = B [Assumed*]
Occupancy category…………………………………………….. = III [Per ref. 3]
Seismic design category………………………………………. = D [Per ref. 3]
Seismic importance factor, IE ……………………………… = 1.25 [Per ref. 3]
Mapped spectral response acceleration (0.2 second
period)
MappedSsspectral
………………………………………….………………….= 1.07 g [Per ref. 3]
response acceleration (1.0 second
period) S1 ………………………….……………….
………………….= 0.39 g [Per ref. 3]
Response modification factor, R ………………………….= 5
(as per table 12.2-1 of ASCE 7 -05 - For intermediate moment resisting frame)

5.5.2 MCE Spectral Response Acceleration Parameters:

MCE spectral response acceleration for short period is given by:
SMS = FaSs ………………………………………………( Eq. 16-37 of IBC 2006)
Fa = 1.00 (from table 1613.5.3(1) of IBC 2006)
\ SMS = F aS s = 1.07
MCE spectral response acceleration for 1 sec. period is given by:
SM1 = FvS1 ………………………………………………( Eq. 16-38 of IBC 2006)
Fv = 1.00 (from table 1613.5.3(2) of IBC 2006)
\ SM1 = F vS 1 = 0.39

5.5.3 Design spectral response acceleration parameters:

5% damped design spectral response acceleration at
short periods, SDS = 2/3 SMS ……………………………….= 0.71
5% damped design spectral response acceleration at
1 second period, SD1 = 2/3 SM1 …………….…………….= 0.26

5.5.4 Calculation of seismic response coefficient:

Cs = SDS / (R/I) = 0.178 (As per eq. 12.8-2 of ASCE 7-05)

Maximum value of Cs:

Approximate fundamental time period Ta = C t hnx = 0.167 sec
For, All othere structural system
Ct = 0.0488 and x= 0.75 [From table 12.8-2 of ASCE 7 - 05]
Height of the structure from the base, h n …………….= 5.150 m
Coefficient of upper limit on calculated period, C u = 1.44
(From table 12.8-1 of ASCE 7 - 05)
Actual fundamental time period = sec
Hence, the Fundamental period of the structure, T = 0.17 sec
\ CS,max = 0.390 (As per Eq. 12.8 -3 of ASCE 07 - 05)

Minimum value of Cs:

From Eq. 12.8-5 & 12.8-6 of ASCE we get, CS,min = 0.01

Hence, adopted Cs = 0.178

Factored Seismic Base Shear, V = Cs W = 45.9 kN

Unfactored Seismic Base Shear, 0.7 V = 32.1 kN

Note:

The seismic lump weight is taken by separately analyzing a STAAD model with every
joints considered as pinned support. From the above STAAD model the nodal
reactions due to dead load is taken and the seismic forces are calculated as below:

1. Total seismic weight is found from the STAAD model and their corresponding
node numbers are noted.

2. The loads corresponding to the nodes located at ground is neglected and half of
the same loads are transferred to the nodes located immediately above the nodes
mentioned earlier.
3. Let us say the loads found as above are w i.
4. Depending upon the time period the exponent 'k' is determined.
5. The nodal distribution of seismic forces are calculated as:

_𝑥=𝐶_𝑣𝑥 ×

Where, V = Seismic base shear.

Cvx = wxhxk / ∑wihik
*To be verified with the final geotechnical report.

Seismic weight of the structure = 257 kN

Note:
a. Vertical distribution of seismic forces is calculated as per section 12.8.3 of ASCE 7 - 05.
b. Period of structure T = 0.17 s < 0.5 s
Hence, the exponent, k = 1
c. wi and hi are the portion of the total effective seismic weight and the height from the base to the corresponding level respectively.
d. The lateral force Fx induced at any level is given by Fx = Cvx V. Where, Cvx = w xhx /∑wihi .
