LITURGY OF THE WORD Alternative readings may be chosen from the Lectionary or
Appendix of this guide.

FIRST READING Genesis 2:18-24

A reading from the book of Genesis 2:18-24

The Lord God said: “It is not good for the man to be alone. I will make a suitable partner for
him.” So the Lord God formed out of the ground various wild animals and various birds of the
air, and he brought them to the man to see what he would call them; whatever the man called
each of them would be its name. The man gave names to all the cattle, all the birds of the air,
and all wild animals; but none proved to be the suitable partner for the man. So the Lord God
cast a deep sleep on the man, and while he was asleep, he took out one of his ribs and closed
up its place with flesh. The Lord God then built up into a woman the rib that he had taken from
the man. When he brought her to the man, the man said: “This one, at last, is bone of my bones
and flesh of my flesh; this one shall be called ‘woman,’ for out of ‘her man’ this one has been
taken.” That is why a man leaves his father and mother and clings to his wife, and the two of
them become one body. The word of the Lord.

All: thanks be to God

RESPONSORIAL PSALM (Psalm 102) The Lord is kind and merciful.

Reader: My soul, give thanks to the Lord, all my being, bless his holy name.
My soul, give thanks to the Lord and never forget all his blessings. R.

Reader: The Lord is compassion and love, slow to anger and rich in mercy.
As a Father has compassion on his sons, the Lord has pity on those who fear him.

Reader: the love of the Lord is everlasting upon those who hold him in fear.
His justice reaches out to children’s children when they keep his covenant in truth

SECOND READING 1 John 4:7-12

A reading from the

Dear friends, let us love one another, for love comes from God. Everyone who loves has been
born of God and knows God. Whoever does not love does not know God, because God is love.
This is how God showed his love among us: He sent his one and only Son into the world that we
might live through him. This is love: not that we loved God, but that he loved us and sent his
Son as an atoning sacrifice for our sins. Dear friends, since God so loved us, we also ought to
love one another. No one has ever seen God; but if we love one another, God lives in us and his
love is made complete in us. The word of the Lord.

All: Thanks be to God

ALLELUIA All stand. There is no Alleluia during the season of lent

GOSPEL READING John 17:20-26

P: The Lord be with you

All: And with your Spirit.
P: A reading from the Holy Gospel according to Jhon.
All: Glory to you O Lord.

P: “My prayer is not for them alone. I pray also for those who will believe in me
through their message, that all of them may be one, Father, just as you are in me
and I am in you. May they also be in us so that the world may believe that you have
sent me. I have given them the glory that you gave me, that they may be one as we
are one— I in them and you in me—so that they may be brought to complete unity.
Then the world will know that you sent me and have loved them even as you have
loved me. “Father, I want those you have given me to be with me where I am, and
to see my glory, the glory you have given me because you loved me before the
creation of the world. “Righteous Father, though the world does not know you, I
know you, and they know that you have sent me. I have made you[a] known to
them, and will continue to make you known in order that the love you have for me
may be in them and that I myself may be in them.”
