Performance Task
Conducting a Mini – Research
This course will not be complete if you will not be able to apply what you have taken up in
Statistics & Probability. For this activity, you will be able to conduct a mini-research applying measures
of position.

Follow the suggested steps in conducting your mini-research.

1. Choosing a topic for the research

How do you choose a topic?
First, think about what you are interested in. Ask yourself the question: what do you want to
know? It might be something about your environment at home, in school or in the
community. It may also be a topic that is related to your life as a student or as a member of
your community. You can also think of a topic which could be of help to you.
Reading or browsing books, surfing the internet or brainstorming is also a great help in
choosing a topic of your research.

2. Creating an outline
Once you have chosen a topic of your research, continue asking the question: what do you
want to know further about your topic? How will you be able to achieve what you want to
present?
First, state the main topic of the research that you would like to pursue. Then add few more
questions that may help clarify your research.

3. Gathering data for the research

This will have two parts:
a. This part uses printed materials such as books, newspaper, magazines or any other
similar materials. You can also browse through the internet. Just remember, when
you take down notes, always jot down your sources. These sources will come handy
whenever you need to go back to your sources for verification.
b. The second part consists of collecting data by interviews, questionnaires or
observations or by direct data gathering, like consulting teacher’s records.

4. Consolidating the Data

When you have the data on your hands, a meaningful analysis about the topic must be done,
and check what you have found out about your data and where these data may yield you
regarding your research.
Organize your thoughts. Again, you will have to present your data into two parts:

a. Your data taken from your readings: What have you read about the topic? Make an
outline of your presentation. Enumerate the main ideas. Then, mention the details
that will give support to your main ideas. Keep your outline organized. Discuss only
those topics that are related to your research topic.
b. Presentation of your Statistical data: Prepare the tabulated results of your
interviews or research. Compute the percentage of responses or you may have to
compute the mean average of your findings. Come up with the comparative results
of your findings. And then, present the results of your collected data in such a way
that they can easily be understood.

5. Writing the research paper

You are now ready to write down your research paper. Here is a suggestion of your research
format:
a. Introduction:
Statement of the topic or problem
Purpose of the research paper
b. Reading:
What have you read about the topic of your research
c. Results of the Data Gathered:
Show the Statistical data of your research
d. Summary:
Summarize the results of the research that you have done
Present your arguments
e. Conclusion:
Present your recommendation
f. Bibliography:
List down the sources that you have used
There are still some guidelines regarding the mechanics to be followed in writing down a
research paper. Make further research on it.

6. Presenting the Research in the class

A research paper will be of no value if it is not shared with other members of the class. The
teacher may schedule a session for the presentation, critiquing and evaluation of each
research.
