MODULE 1: The Road to the Right Choice

This module basically discusses the essential information about the Senior High School
curriculum and the professions the students will most probably land after graduating from
any of these curriculum particularly the Academic track composed of the General
Academic Track (GAS), Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM),
Humanities & Social Sciences (HUMSS) and the Accountancy, Business & Management
(ABM); then we have the TVL or the Technical-Vocation Livelihood so as the various
strand and specializations incorporated therein, the arts & design track and last but not
the least the sports track.

The presentation of the module 1 to the students become exciting as Ma’am Karyll
initiated the motivation activity entitled DESIGNING A COSTUME, wherein the students
were instructed to make a ‘costume’ using a few art materials - such as; cartolina,
colored paper, newspapers, scissors, and glue. They were asked to make a costume
based on the four exits after Senior High School, the learners where divided into groups
and were asked to pick up colored papers. It was made aware to the students that each
color represents the four (4) SHS curriculum particularly Red/Pink for the Academic Track,
Blue for the Arts & Design, Green for TVL and yellow for Sports Track. Each group was
instructed to design a simple costume which symbolizes the profession of the curriculum
assigned to the group. The group then chooses a member who will model or wear the
designed costume. Thereafter, the group introduced the track given to them and other
professions anchored to the track that the students will most probably pursue if they go
to college. After which, the process questions were discussed and given necessary
answers by the students.

During the lecture proper the factors affecting the life and career choices the following
factors were given due importance namely PERSONAL FACTORS, FAMILY FACTORS &
SOCIAL FACTORS.

Based on the discussion, Personal Factors are composed of:

SKILLS AND ABILITIES: The foundation of the discussion of the factor was based upon
Parson’s Trait and Factor Theory of Occupational Choice. It is therefore relevant to
highlight that the learner should know what he or she is capable of doing. It highlights the
fact that an individual person performs best and is at his/her highest level of productivity
when he or she is in a job that commensurate his skills and abilities.

Interest & Personality – the foundation of the discussion basically boils from the theory of
John Holland highlighting the six personality types acronymically known as RIASIC. It is
simply made aware during the discussion that it is truly important for a learner to know his
or her personality and interest to build self-understanding and with enough self-
knowledge he or she can have better career decisions relative to personality and
interest.

Life Roles- the discussion of the factor was grounded on the theory of Super called the
Lifespan Theory. It is simply implied in the discussion that the assumed roles of an individual
or a learner enclosing its demands and other relevant outward factors has direct effect
to the perspectives of the learner in terms of career and life decisions.

Previous Experience – In the discussion, the Social Cognitive Career Theory explains that
an individual becomes positively reinforced in doing or pursuing something an activity,
task or career direction and the rest if they already have a history of milestone,
achievement and optimistic experience relating to the task, subject matter and the rest.
CHILDHOOD FANTASIES – this typically completes the statement “PAGLAKI KO GUSTO KO
MAGING”. The roles that we do in doing playtime during childhood stage molds and
bridges a connection what a learner portray before and what he or she might be in
his/her future life.

Furthermore, Social Factors are comprised of Influence of Friends & Peers, Influence of
Media & Technology and Industry demands and expectations. Lastly, Family factors are
divided into sub-factors, namely Parental Influence, Beliefs and Traditions and financial
resources.

One of the highlights of the activity was the SIKRETO SA TAGUMPAY NI SELINA which was
done right after the lecturette. Followed by reasons behind my choices for the
application, my next career move activity for the reflection and ended with the
accomplishing the knowing the right choice for the evaluation at the end of Module 1.
