GREEN BUILDING INDEX

The Green Building Index (GBI) is Malaysia's industry recognised green rating
tool for buildings to promote sustainability in the built environment and raise
awareness among Developers, Architects, Engineers, Planners, Designers, Contractors
and the Public about environmental issues and our responsibility to the future
generations. The GBI rating tool provides an opportunity for developers and building
owners to design and construct green, sustainable buildings that can provide energy
savings, water savings, a healthier indoor environment, better connectivity to public
transport and the adoption of recycling and greenery for their projects and reduce our
impact on the environment.

A Green building focuses on increasing the efficiency of resource use energy,

water, and materials while reducing building impact on human health and the
environment during the building’s lifecycle, through better siting, design,
construction, operation, maintenance, and removal. Green Buildings should be
designed and operated to reduce the overall impact of the built environment on its
surroundings.
Tun Abdul Razak SOCSO Rehabilitation Center

SOCSO Rehabilitation Center is a project that has started since 2008 and after years of
planning and construction process, finally the SOCSO Rehabilitation Center has
commenced operations on October 1, 2014. On April 21, 2017, the SOCSO
Rehabilitation Center was officiated by Yang Amat Berhormat Prime Minister Dato
'Seri Haji Mohd Najib bin Tun Haji Abdul Razak. The center has also been awarded
the name of Tun Abdul Razak SOCSO Rehabilitation Center or TRRC (Tun Razak
Rehabilitation Center). The Rehabilitation Center is built with pure motives that is to
help SOCSO insurers or workers to be physically and mentally restored and
eventually return to work.

Wisma Perkeso Melaka

The main buildings in PERKESO are made by material that call Alucobond. This
material covers all the main building. The technology related to responsive façades is
predominantly associated with advancements in materials such as glass, windows, or
coatings. When exploring the capabilities of producing an energy efficient structure,
designers often utilize aluminium composite material (ACM) as a collaborative
material, used with a solar efficient glass, advanced coating system, or alongside
building-integrated photovoltaics. Less often are designers transforming the
aluminium composite cladding itself to assist in the energy performance of the
building. The purpose are to reduce the heat and transfer heat. This is may cause the
usage of air conditioner decrease. High building structures at the main building also
allow heat reduction.
Then, the trees are planted all around the building to get a good ventilation. The fresh air that
comes from the planted tree will create a cheerful and harmonious atmosphere. In this area
rain water are collected for toilets use and watering plant activities. This will ensure saving of
water usage. The open area, transparent roof and the wind hole provide a perfect lighting and
ventilation.
There are two types of street lights used in this area. The first is the solar street
light. This lamp is charged with solar energy. In simple term, solar light is any
luminance fixtures that were powered by the Sun. Giving potential saving on electric
bill, underground cabling and high maintenance electric generator. The second one is
a light specially designed for minimum brightness. This street light is a great
innovation to save on electricity.
The comparison between typical building and green building

1. Energy and Environment

This is the category that most people think of first when they think green. It also
includes many of the most dramatic cost-saving opportunities. Energy measures include
technologies and design that improve building performance to achieve more with less input.
Strategies include incorporating shell measures such as insulation and high-efficiency
glazing; passive heating and cooling; high-efficiency lighting; solar and other renewable
energy; and high-efficiency HVAC and plumbing technologies.

Human workers may not respond well to micromanagement, but buildings are another story.
Many property managers find that tracking and controlling the energy consumption of
individual units and/or zones pays off very well in terms of energy savings. Smart meters in
particular can save tremendous amounts of energy by automatically adjusting to changes in
weather, number of occupants, and other variables.

2. Indoor Environmental Quality

Integral to the green building concept is ensuring that the building supports human health
and wellbeing. Issues in this category include reducing exposure to indoor environmental
toxins like VOCs, heavy metals, and biological hazards such as mold ensuring adequate air
flow and quality; providing optimal levels and quality of light (especially daylighting); and
maintaining an aesthetically pleasing atmosphere for stress reduction and improved worker
efficiency.

Maintenance is integral to keeping a “green” building green. Some of the biggest

contributors to poor-indoor environmental quality are, ironically, cleaning and disinfecting
products. Yet it’s not just conventional cleaning supplies. Some so-called “green” cleaners,
while not themselves a source for concern, can react with other chemicals present in your
building to create toxic compounds. For example, pine and citrus oils contain compounds
called terpenes that can combine with ozone to form the carcinogen formaldehyde, as well as
fine particulates that can adversely affect human health.

The California EPA recommends limiting the use of these products, especially during
periods of high outdoor air pollution. Property managers should be aware of chemical
interactions of this sort, and look for non-chemical alternatives when possible, such as
cleaning systems that utilize electrolyzed water.
CONCLUSION

With new technologies constantly being developed to complement current practices in

creating greener structures, the benefits of green building can range from environmental to
economic to social. By adopting greener practices, we can take maximum advantage of
environmental and economic performance. Green construction methods when integrated
while design and construction provide most significant benefits

Now, we should consider the goals of green building. Of course, one of the main goals is
to make the earth more sustainable, but it really does go deeper than that. When decide to go
green, our goal will be to actually help to sustain the environment without disrupting the
natural habitats around it. When start a building project, and disrupt the natural habitats
around it can actually make an impact in the wildlife and environment that will be much like
a butterfly effect. Even the smallest changes that can make will help to promote a better
planet earth, and a better place for us all to live- not just us humans, but also the plants and
wildlife that take up their residence here on earth as well. Green building is something that
everyone should really jump on to. If don’t plan to rebuild our home, then we may just want
to make a few green changes within our home to ensure that you are able to get the goals that
you want out of it. It can cut down on energy usage, save money, and make a big impact on
the environment. It will find that it isn’t as hard as people make it out to be, and we will feel
better about our self when we go green too.
