We use this when the
alternative hypothesis is of the
form μ > c, μ < c, p > c, p < c.
EXAMPLE # 1
According to a study done last year, the average
monthly expenses for mobile phone loads of high
school students in Manila was ₱350. A Statistics
student believes that this amount has increased
since January of this year. Is there a reason to
believe that this amount has really increased if a
random sample of 60 students has an average
monthly expenses for mobile phone loads of
₱380? Use a 0.10 level of significance. Population
standard deviation was ₱77.
EXAMPLE # 3
It is claimed that the mean annual
salary for CSR is ₱188,584. A research
selected 50 CSR. He got a mean annual
salary of ₱188,600. Does this show
that the annual salary for CSR agents is
greater than what was claimed? Use a
population standard deviation of
₱39.50.
This is the value that separates the
rejection and acceptance region.

EXAMPLE #2
The Head of the Math department
announced that the mean score of Grade 9
in the first periodic examination in Math
was 90 and the standard deviation was 15.
One student took a random sample of 27
students and computed a mean score of
84. At 0.01 significance level can the
student’s random sample invalidate the
announcement of the department head?
EXAMPLE # 4
A company which produces batteries claims
that the life expectancy of their batteries is
90 hours. In order to test the claim, a
consumer interest group tested a random
sample of 41 batteries. The test resulted to a
mean life expectancy of 87 hours and
standard deviation of 10 hours. Using a 0.05
level of significance, can it be concluded that
the life expectancy of their batteries is less
than 90 hours?

EXAMPLE # 5
The cashier of a restaurant claims that the
average amount spent by customers for
dinner is ₱120. A sample of 30 customers
over a month period was randomly selected
and it was found out that the average
amount spent for dinner was ₱122.50. If the
significance level is set at 0.01. Can it be said
that the average amount spent by customers
is more than ₱120? Assume standard
deviation from the sample at ₱6.50
