An Examination of Scientists in the Pre-Era: A Study Guide for Students

1. What did scientists observe before this study?

Before the conducted study, scientists observed a correlation between diabetes and the
development Alzheimer’s and other forms of dementia. Apparently, having diabetes
increased one’s chances of developing dementia.
2. What was done in the current study?
In the study, about 2,000 members, who had no dementia, had their blood glucose levels
tracked for 7 years.
3. What were the results of the study?
With the data, scientists discovered a positive correlation with blood sugar and the risk of
developing dementia. Better said, people with high blood sugar developed a form of
dementia more frequently than people with lower blood sugar levels.
4. What was the interpretation of the results?
Aware of the facts, scientists interpreted that high blood sugar levels correlates with a
greater risk of dementia. However, researchers also noted that uncertainty remains about
high blood sugar itself causing a higher dementia development risk. In other words,
lowering blood sugar levels may not decrease the risk of developing dementia; so, going
a diets to reduce levels of blood sugar in order to avoid dementia proves controversial.
5. Do you believe the interpretation?
I concur with the interpretation that high blood sugar levels correlates with a higher risk
of developing dementia, but may not cause the disease. The evidence, such as higher
blood sugar levels correlating with dementia development, appears convincing; yet, the
uncertainty that the higher levels themselves cause the increased risk appears
unconvincing.
6. What is left to be answered?
The predicament of the causes of dementia remains unsolved, especially if blood
sugars of the sole cause of the development.
