CONFIDENTIAL @UTHM Universiti Tun Hussein Onn Malaysia UNIVERSITI TUN HUSSEIN ONN MALAY; FINAL EXAMINATION SEMESTER I SESSION 2014/2015 COURSE NAME : THERMODYNAMICS I COURSE CODE : BDA20703 PROGRAMME : 2BDD EXAMINATION DATE : DECEMBER 2014 / JANUARY 2015 DURATION : 3 HOURS INSTRUCTION : PART A: ANSWER FOUR (4) QUESTIONS ONLY, AND PART B: ANSWER ALL QUESTIONS ‘THIS QUESTION PAPER CONSISTS OF FIVE (5) PAGES CONFIDENTIAL PART A a @) ) @ © (b) BDA20703, During a vaporization process, a substance exists as part liquid and part vapor. That i, itis a mixture of saturated liquid and saturated vapor. Quantity of dry fraction (x is defined as aratio ofthe vapor mass to the total mass of the substance: ™y =a The analysis of saturated lig saturated liquid is Hy and the enthalpy occupied by saturated vapor is Hy. The t enthalpy, H is: id-vapor mixture for close system, the enthalpy occupied by " H=Hy+Hy sd) +» Equation (1) From the Equation (1), derive or prove the following equation; b= hy + xhyg — (ks/kg) (Given: H = entholpy, h= specific enthalpy, 9 = vopor, quid, and m= mass) (Smarks) ‘The absolute pressure of manometer shown in FIGUREQI(byis 200 kPa. If the specific gravity of oil is 0.91 and specific gravity of kerosene is 0.82. Determine the local atmospheric pressure in bar. (12marks) Polytropic process is an actual expansion and compression of gases, where its pressure and volume are often related by PV" = C, where m is polytropic index and C is @ constants. Prove that the boundary work for an ideal gas equation is, mk (2-11) on wy, » nel (7 marks) When Im’ of saturated liquid water is being heated at 200°C, it expands isothermally in a closed system until its quality is x %. Ifthe process is quasi-equilibrium and the total work produced by this expansion is Wy = 1.335 x 10° KJ. Determine the value of x in percent. (13 marks) Qs Qa Os @ &) (@) (b) @ BDA20703, Nozzle and diffuser are can be conveniently analysed as steady flow devices. What are the differences between nozzle and diffuser? Sketch the devices and explain the change in parameters crossing them. (5 marks) A'5 mx 6 mx 8 mroom is to be heated by an electric resistance heater placed in a short duct in the room. Initially, the room temperature is 15°C, and the local atmospheric pressure is 98 kPa, The room is losing heat steadily to the outside at a rate 200 ki/min, A 200 W fan circulates the air steadily through the duct and the electric heater at an average mass flow rate at 50 kg/min. The duct can be assumed to be adiabatic, and there is no air leaking in or out of the room, If it takes 15 minutes for the room air to reach an average temperature of 25°C, find (i) the power rating of electric heater; and (ii) the temperature rise that the air experiences each time it passes through the heater. (15 marks) Heat is transferred to a heat engine from a furnace at a rate of 2.8 kW. If the rate of heat rejected by the heat engine is 2.1 kW, determine the net power output and thermal efficiency of this engine, G marks) A heat pump comprises of four (4) basic components, uses R-134a as refrigerant and utilises total amount ofthe net power produced by the heat engine from question Q4 (a) to drive its compressor. During heat pump operation, its refrigerant enters the condenser at 770kPa and 38°C at a rate of 0.02 kg/s and leaves at constant pressure as a saturated liquid. For this heat pump conditions, you are required to: () draw a schematic diagram for the heat pump system including its basic ‘components complete with labelling of its components name, energies that enter and leave the system; (i) determine the rate of heat rejected by the condenser; (iii) the rate of heat absorption from the surrounding; (iv) the COP of the heat pump; and (v) _ show the heat rejection process by the condenser on a P-h diagram complete with labelling of its pressure and enthalpy values on the diagram. (17 marks) An experiment claim to have raised the temperature of a small amount of water to 150°C. by transferring heat from high pressure steam at 120°C. Is this reasonable claim? Why? Assume no refrigerator or heat pump is used in the process. (3 marks)
