Students in Cindy Coulter’s Zumba class know

they’re in for a good time when they enter the gym at
Fort Marcy Complex.
The spunky fitness instructor with red hair walked
into the gym last Friday, sporting a pink Zumba
Breast Cancer Awareness shirt and a smile. She laced
up her black sneakers and put on her black sweat-
band before getting everybody started.
“Hello everybody!” she yelled happily to her stu-
dents. She asked if anybody was there for the first
time, and when two newcomers raised their hands,
she teased them about being in the back row. “Don’t
you know first-timers come to the front row? Don’t
worry what foot you’re on and don’t worry about
what your hands are doing. Enjoy the music and break
a sweat — those are the only rules.”
Coulter’s enthusiasm for Zumba is contagious. The
Santa Fe fitness instructor has been teaching Zumba
classes for the past two years.
On Friday, Coulter and her seven other Zumba
instructors will host a Party in Pink Zumbathon
to benefit Susan G. Komen For the Cure at the
Genoveva Chavez Community Center community
room. Zumbathons have been popular around the
country for the last few years as fundraisers for chari-
ties.

11 a.m. Friday class at Fort Marcy began. Zumba is a
dance-fitness class that is inspired by Latin dance and
music.
Coulter was one of hundreds of instructors to be
selected to host the Party in Pink Zumbathon, after
applying through Zumba’s corporate offices. The
two-hour event will be packed with sizzling dance
moves, upbeat Latin music and laughter — if it’s any-
thing like Coulter’s Friday class.
“Love, love, love, I want your love,” she sang along
to a Lady Gaga song as her class warmed up by doing
shoulder rolls to the beat. “Remember, singing is
encouraged.”
Everyone is welcome to Friday’s event and people
don’t need any previous Zumba experience under
their belts to enjoy themselves.
“I tell (my students) to have fun, break a sweat
and it becomes a party atmosphere,” Coulter said
happily. She tells them to imagine it’s Saturday night
and “you’re out with your friends, wearing your hot
clothes, your miniskirt — that always gets a laugh
— and your green spandex.
“I try and make them forget about what they’re
doing and enjoy the time.”
One of the great things about Zumba is it isn’t like
other traditional exercise and aerobics classes, said
loyal Zumba student Ron Romanovsky.
“What I like about it is it’s good exercise but it
