Q1. Calculate the cube root :

𝟑 𝟑
(a) √𝟏𝟎𝟎𝟎 = 10 (b) √𝟓𝟏𝟐 =8

(b) Calculate the difference in the lengths of the sides of the cubes:

10 – 3 = 7
Ans ; Difference is of 7 cm
(c) A single serving box of cereal measures 2 in x 3 in x 4 in. Explain mathematically whether increasing the
height by four times, from 4 in to 16 in, would increase the volume by four times.

2 x 3 x 4 = 24
2 x 3 x 16 = 96

Yes if we increase the height by 4 times the volume will also increase.

(d) An ice tray can make 14 ice cubes. If the length of each cube is 2 inches, Calculate the total volume of
the ice tray.
112in3

(f) Calculate cubic feet of space this squirrel has if this ½ log is 10ft long with a diameter of 2 ft?
3.14 x 4 x 1 x 10 x 0.5
= 15.7
Ans = 15.7ft3
Q2. Put these 3 ice-cream treats in order from greatest volume to least volume. Show the math that
supports your answer.
Solution:
ICE CREAM SANDWICH > CYLINDERICAL ICE CREAM > CONICAL ICE CREAM
(96in3) (75.36in3) (41.86in3)

Q3. A swimming pool is 7m long, 5m wide, and 1m deep. You want to resurface your pool’s interior
surface and it costs $3 per square meter. Calculate the cost to resurface the pool.

Solution:
2(lb + bh + hl) – lb
= 2(35 + 5 + 7) -35
= 2 x 47 – 35
= 94 – 35
= 59

Cost = 59 x 3
= $177
Q4. Select ALL correct choices. Show all work.

Solution:
A&B
A = 10 x 10 x 10 =1000
B = 1 x 10 x 100 = 1000

Q5. The Cylinder and cone have the same height and radius. Calculate the volume of the cylinder if the
volume of the cone is 45 cm3?

Solution:
Volume of cylinder = 135 cm3

Q6. Calculate the volume of the model house.

Solution : 104 cm3
Q7. A rectangular container is 12 cm long, 11 cm wide and 10 cm high. The container is filled with water
to a depth of 8 cm. A metal sphere of radius 3.5cm is placed in the water. It sinks to the bottom.
Calculate the rise in the water level. Give your answer correct to 3 significant figures.
Solution :
0.53

Q8. The volume of each group of solids is given. Solve to find the volume of each of the
four types of blocks.
Solution :

Rectangle = 12
Square = 12
Q9. PAPERWEIGHT Estimate the amount of glass in the paperweight. Explain how you found your
estimate.
Solution :13.775 in3

Q 10. Calculate the thickness ‘x’ of the hollow cylinder of height 100 cm if the volume between the
inner and outer cylinders is equal to 11000 Pi mm3 and the outer diameter is 12 mm.
