To Whom It May Concern:

It is with pleasure that I am writing to apply for your position of a special education teacher. I will have
earned a Bachelor’s degree in Special Education with a Minor in Reading, and an Endorsement in Early
Childhood Special Education. I have also completed coursework in Early Childhood Enrichment, as
well as Sign Language and Childhood Development. I have worked hard to diligently gain experience
and knowledge within the field, as I am a non-traditional student who possesses the qualifications
needed.

With my education comes experience. I have been around students with disabilities sense I was young,
and this has fostered my love of learners whose learning abilities differ from those of others. My
involvement alongside students with disabilities began when I Peer-Tutored a student with Autism. In
this experience I was able to feel first hand the successes and struggles a student with disabilities
endures on a daily basis. I delivered touch point math lessons and beginner reading strategies. As a
Direct Support Provider for a girl with Autism, I utilized instructional strategies and management
techniques to provide specialized education at home, and educated her on how to use her PECS device.
Then as a Direct Support Professional I assisted four adults in leading self-directed lives by completing
daily life responsibilities through the task analysis checklists I would create. I also trained them in social
skills, and encouraged them to learn to serve as their own advocates. One of my favorite titles I have
ever obtained was a One-On-One Paraprofessional for a Preschool student with Down Syndrome. I was
responsible for modifying material and activities to scaffold the student’s learning. These positions have
enabled me to develop strong communication, dependability, patience, and empathy through hands on
experience.

I have found joy in serving as a Special Olympics coach, and honored to be named the recipient of the
Gloria Schaefer Memorial Scholarship. This scholarship is awarded to one nominated student in the
state of South Dakota who exemplifies selfless dedication to others, academic success, drive and
integrity, and be known for humble appreciation of family, friends, and strangers. I have had the
privilege to be selected to serve on the Dean Search Community Board for Northern State University,
and I find delight in leading a community wide reading clinic back in my hometown.

For as long as I can remember I have wanted to devote my heart and skills to working with students who
have special needs, and I am very much looking forward to offering my compassion and abilities to your
school. In my career I plan to be a lead learner. How I plan to do that is to properly implement a
systematic, purposeful, individualized, approach to teaching students with disabilities. I will do this by
teaching and enhancing my students with the academic, social, vocational, and personal skills they need
to live an independent, satisfying, and productive life. I look forward to the possibility of interviewing
for the special education position, and can be reached at (605)-880-3662. Thank you for considering my
application. I look forward to hearing from you.

Sincerely,

Emily Gabur
