Proposal Comments
Some common writing issues
• Do not capitalize chemical names, eg Oxygen
• Citations (endnote #, then the reference at the end)
• Calculations- show them!
• Energy and mass tables
• No need to define common processes, like distillation (just
give a ref)
• Tables and figures need brief text to describe them. Figure 1
shows….. Table 2 lists….
• Table caption is above of the table. (Figure caption below the
figure).
• Use technical words: “approximately” instead of “roughly”,
“reacted” instead of “used up”; “liquid” instead of “wet fluid” ,
“reduce” instead of “bring down” , “connected” instead of
“hooked up”, “heating” instead of “heating up”
Writing… continued
• 6. Do not use “we” or “our”
• 7. Be aware specifications vs assumptions
• 8. Use of optimize or optimal; best (maybe use
promising or potential)
• 9. Be as specific as possible, giving values or range of
values
• 10. Define unfamiliar terms and processes (or at least
give a ref)
• 11. Use only 2 -3 significant figures
• 12. Do not start a sentence with a number: Use “One”
instead of “1”
• 13. Use simple, direct, clear, concise writing

• How to put coursework and project work?

Chemical and Process Engineering: proficiency in chemical reaction

engineering, fluid dynamics, mass transfer, heat transfer, process
control, thermodynamics, separation processes, and HAZOP/safety.

Use active
Senior Design Project verbs.
Team Describe
Member the
(UCSD) (1/20XX-6/20XX)
• Managed the key accomplishments.
timeline for the project, coordinated and led progress
meetings, assigned division of labor including accountability.
• Designed a Methanol to Dimethyl-ether plant with ASPEN Plus
software in first project which involved optimizing conversion rate
while maintaining cost effectiveness and safety.
• Designed a thermochemical energy storage process in second project
in an effort to meet the standards set by a grant funding opportunity.
Cost was minimized, as solar energy is stored in order to power the
whole cyclical operation, thus electricity cost was lowered by 98%.
The project was simulated via ASPEN plus software.
Lab classes…
• Chemical Engineering Laboratory Experience (UCSD) )
(1/20XX-3/20XX)
• Hands-on engineering laboratory experience that incorporated
teamwork, data analysis, laboratory reports, and presentations in
the following topics: Hydrogen Fuel Cell, Low Pressure Chemical
Vapor Deposition Reactor, Plate Heat Exchanger, Liposome
Nanoparticle Synthesis, Photocatalytic Reactor, and Solid Oxide
Fuel Cell Simulation.

These are the topics you want to be asked about at an interview

Other technical activities…
• Jacobs School of Engineering, Global TIES program (1/20XX-
3/20XX)
• One village Philippines Project (Gawad Kalinga)
• Worked with clients to design household ceramic water filtration
system for communities in Philippines
• Project was among top 16 selected as top commitments in Clinton
Global Initiative 2013
• Utilized excel for budget report, cost benefit analysis, and Gantt chart

• Chemical engineering AIChE car competition (1/20XX-3/20XX)

• Collaborated with a team of chemical engineers to design and build a
chemically powered car.
• Referred to materials safety data sheet to assess the chemicals risks
and safety
• Organized fundraising event for the team
Some final guidelines
• Put the information you want to talk about first.
• The resume is your chance to set the outline for an interview
• Make sure you highlight your strengths and interests

• If you don’t like something you did, or did poorly, don’t put
it down.
