PRE-K Floor Plan

Learning centers

1. Science center
a. I chose to place my science center closer to the bathroom in the case there are any spills
or accidents, they have easy access. In the text, Introduction to Early Childhood
Education, it states “areas in which water is used should be as close to the water supply
as possible” (Brewer, 2015, p. 80).
2. Art center
a. This center is located nears the windows and the double doors that lead to outside. This
center was placed here because of the amount of natural light emitting in the
classroom. It was also placed here incase the students need inspiration; they can look
outside along with a sink next to it for messes. My reasoning for including this center is
that students should have a place where they can have creative and artistic freedom.
This center can also tie in other content and is very beneficial for hands-on learners
(Brewer, 2015, p. 129).
3. Imagination center
Ms. Jones’
PRE-K Floor Plan
a. Otherwise known as “free-play”, this center is located along the back wall of the
classroom adjacent to the science center and double doors. I placed it here because it
has an abundant amount of space along with not distracting students who are at the
carpet area. The imagination center is beneficial to students because similar to the art
center, it allows for free expression which is important for young students.
4. Reading center
a. This center is located in a corner near the windows. The reasoning for this is so students
can have natural light emitting onto them. It’s also distanced from the potentially louder
centers.
5. Writing center
a. This center is located next to the Reading center if students would like to write about
their reading. It was also placed here for the natural light.
6. Sensory center
a. This center is located at the very front of the class, away from the rest of the centers.
This center is placed specifically away so students can have freedom to focus and relax.

Various instructional areas

1. Kidney table for small group

a. This is located off to the side, however the teacher is still able to scan the room and see
all of the students from this spot.
2. Carpet area
a. This is located in the center of the room since it is where the students will begin and
end, it is the centrally main location.
3. 3 group tables
a. The tables are located directly behind the carpet area so that students can transition
quickly and smoothly.

Other elements

1. Reflection section
a. This seating section is located close to the carpet time so that the student can still
participate and observe the lesson while also distancing themselves to allow for self-
reflection.
2. Bathroom
a. The bathroom is located in the back corner of the room to provide minimal distraction
from the rest of the lessons and activities.
3. Cubbies
a. Cubbies are located directly at the entrance, so that when students arrive, they can
immediately place their belongings away. It also allows for dismissal to run more
efficiently since they can grab their backpacks as they go.
4. Student mailbox
a. This is also located at the front of the door so that when students are coming and going,
they can check or drop off.
5. Double doors
Ms. Jones’
PRE-K Floor Plan
a. The double doors are located at the back corner diagonal from the front door. These are
placed here to lead access to the playground. In the text Introduction to Early Childhood
Education, in Chapter 3 it includes a visual of a floorplan for a Pre-K classroom. In this
layout, the doors are located near the art center along with a science based station
(Brewer, 2015, p. 81)
6. Camera.
a. The camera is located directly above the door to depict who is coming and going from
the class while also have a view of the back door as well.
7. Flexible seating
a. The flexible seating is located throughout the classroom. However, it is also specifically
located around the carpet. This is so that students have the option to use them during
carpet time without having to run around the room.
8. Moveable technology screen
a. This will be primarily located in front of the carpet to be used for instruction.
9. Additional sink
a. The additional sink is located near the art center so that students have easy access to
clean themselves and their area.
