1. Journal Article: Family and consumer sciences and STEM integration, by Carter, Vinson;
Beachner, Maggie; Daugthry, Michael K, Journal of Family and Consumer Sciences 2015

According to the Association for Career and Technical Education, most high-school students are

involved in career and technical education programs. The government, schools, and the media

have been putting a lot of emphasis on science, technology, engineering and mathematics

education (STEM), because the United States hasn’t been attracting as many students into those

degree programs or careers. There have been efforts to increase the number of females in the

STEM fields, but women are less likely to engage in STEM programs. The President’s Council

of Advisors on Science and Technology made a statement that they must prepare all students to

be proficient in STEM subjects. Because there are many women in Family Consumer Sciences

(FCS), the education system has been trying to incorporate STEM into FCS to increase the

number of women in STEM education and in the workforce. The President’s Council of

Advisors on Science and Technology also hope to inspire all students to learn STEM and

motivate them to pursue careers in those fields.

5. Theses and Dissertations: Prioritizing Professional Development Needs of Nebraska

Secondary Family and Consumer Sciences Teachers, by Erwin, Carol J., 2018

This dissertation states the importance of the content of knowledge that Family and Consumer

Sciences teachers need to teach effectively. The author explains that these teachers must be

knowledgeable in many areas including human development, nutrition, fashion design, consumer

economics, and so forth. This dissertation explains the different roles that Family and Consumer

Sciences teachers have as well. This thesis did a study and identified the need for professional

development for Nebraska’s secondary Family and Consumer Sciences teachers. The author also

reveals what the motivators and barriers are for professional development and what are the

preferred methods for it. The reason she chose to focus on FACS is because according to her

research across the nation there is a shortage in FACS teachers and Nebraska was on of the states

reporting such a shortage.
