Recycling
Much of what we throw away could be reused. Recycling puts garbage to good use. Recycling helps
preserve precious resources because it saves on the use of raw materials and energy. It also
reduces pollution caused when waste is dumped.
Glass can be remolded. This is better than making fresh glass from raw materials, but it is even
better to reuse bottles and jars. Metals can be recycled by being remolded and reused. Metals such
as aluminum from tins and cans which are part of household waste can be recycled. Scraps from
cars provide a source of metals for recycling.

Paper is easy to recycle. Every home and office should have a paper recycling routine. Plastics are
the worst problem because they are not biodegradable, as they do not break down. They are difficult
to recycle and cause harmful pollution when burned. It is important to use as little plastic as possible.
We should only use plastic that can be recycled or is biodegradable.

In conclusion, recycling is very useful.

to be in need of a job. He met many rich merchants and farmers, but none of them gave him a job.
They claimed that they had already had many employees. They did not know that the man was their

that the sturdy and strong young man before him would be the next ruler of the kingdom. He gave
the prince many tiring jobs to finish. The prince did them as best he could. The carpenter was
satisfied with his spirit.

Jellyfish are boneless creatures that float freely through the world’s oceans. Although jellyfish exist in
our oceans worldwide, they are particularly prominent in coastal areas. Jellyfish can be found in all
shapes and sizes, from just a few inches in diameter to well over a metre.

There are thought to be around 2,000 different species of jellyfish, the most common being the big,
colourful ones found in warmer coastal areas. There are four different types of jellyfish that are
categorised by their shapes and the way in which they behave.

Despite the name, jellyfish are not actually fish, but are instead classed as a separate species as
they are unlike any other animals on Earth. The body of jellyfish is made up of a non-living jellylike
substance called mesoglea. This jelly is surrounded by a layer of skin that is just one cell thick. The
body of jellyfish is mainly made up of water, around.90% in fact.

Jellyfish also have tentacles around their mouths that vary in length depending on the species of
jellyfish, which are used to catch and sting their prey. The tentacles of jellyfish are covered in a skin
that contains special cells, to sting, grip, or stick. Jellyfish are able to produce these cells at an
alarming rate so they are effectively disposable to the jellyfish.

A few jellyfish stings contain toxin which they use to stun and kill prey. The box jellyfish, found in the
oceans around Australia, have a sting powerful enough to be fatal to humans. The long tentacles of
the jellyfish produce the sting.

From the text we can conclude that....

A
jellyfish are small and boneless

jellyfish stings are not fatal to humans

jellyfish only survive in deep blue seas

the tentacles are only used to sting

jellyfish is not a fish

Weapon to Fight Global Warming: Clouds

18th November 2015 -12:32 p.m.

US scientists are working on what could one day become a controversial weapon to battle global
warming: clouds.

Misting ocean clouds with saltwater, the theory goes, could make them reflect more sunlight away
from the earth.

“If you can reflect away a little of-that radiation and not allow it to be absorbed, you will cool the
planet,” says University of Washington atmospheric scientist Tom Ackerman.

The phenomenon has been observed over cargo ships, as microscopic particles in smokestack
effluent collect water droplets, leaving trails of “brightened” clouds in their wake.

Ackerman’s team believes the effect could be recreated using tiny salt particles to reduce solar
radiation absorbed by the ocean. However, Ackerman says no investor is willing to support field
tests and environmental activists have threatened to disrupt them.

Other researchers in the US, United Kingdom and Germany working on high-tech climate hacks
from dimming the sun’s rays with stratospheric aerosols to growing phytoplankton to suck carbon
dioxide from the seas have hit similar barriers.
The point of contention isn't whether humanity could one day use so-called geoengineering to cool
Earth - but whether we should.

“People have this sort of innate response that we’re tinkering with Mother Nature and we shouldn’t
be,” Ackerman told DPA—even though, he points out, by burning fossil fuels “we are already adding
carbon dioxide to the atmosphere.”

Earth’s temperature is currently on course to rise at least 4°C this century as a result of increasing '
carbon dioxide and other greenhouse gas levels in the atmosphere.

What are US scientists doing?

Promoting a campaign on how to save Earth.

Long ago there lived a king who was ill and had only one way for him to recover; he had to stay on
the top of a mountain where he could inhale fresh air and live peacefully. Knowing this, the king
delegated his duties to the minister as the prince, Prince Agung, was still too young to become a
ruler. He would return to the kingdom when he was healthy.

Time passed. Feeling comfortable as a ruler, the minister had a wicked thought. “If I can get rid of
the king, I will be the king,” the minister thought, “my family will live happily.”

To facilitate his plan, he sent his loyal fellow to meet the king to get rid of him. The minister laughed
happily, dreaming of becoming the next king.

The minister’s fellow had arrived at the inn where the King, Queen and their people stayed. He
greeted them and told them of his intention. “Good afternoon, Your Majesty. The minister asks me to
meet you and ask your condition. He always prays for your health." The king was happy knowing his
minister was attentive. After chatting for a while, he allowed the man to have a rest and stay in a tent
not far from his room. He asked his servants to serve the man well.

When night arrived, the man got out from the tent and approached the king’s room. He successfully
entered the room, but he was speechless knowing his kind and wise king slept soundly. "How could I
kill this good man?" the man thought. “No, I won’t. I'm going to tell him about the minister’s real
motive. I hope the king will forgive me." He left the king’s room immediately.

The following morning, the man met the king and informed him accordingly. However, the king
wasn’t shocked as he had already predicted. The king told the man that, in fact, he was all right. He
just wanted proof that the minister had bad intentions. He had been asking the commander and the
prince to keep an eye on him. They would arrest the minister with their own hands.

Teachers often assign students with homework and assignments that they have to complete outside
of school hours. Students may do it after school is over, in a park or at home. Students have pros
and cons about homework.

Here are what students agree with the idea of assigning homework.

First, they realize that not all materials can be learned and digested in class. That’s why they need
homework so they have enough time to read the materials and collect information about the
materials. After finishing the homework, they can measure whether they have mastered the
materials they have learned or not.

Second, they need to practise the information they have learned in class, such as memorizing
formulas in physics or vocabulary in English and Bahasa Indonesia, observing a natural
phenomenon in social sciences or practising dialogs, telling stories, etc. in English. They have a lot
of time to improve their skills by doing such activities.

Third, by doing homework, they learn to manage their time efficiently, be responsible for their duties
and be independent. They have to be on schedule and submit the homework on time; otherwise,
they will receive poor marks.

Fourth, doing homework can be done with friends; meaning they have occasions to socialize too.
Besides, they can help each other. This, of course, improves their care and understanding.

However, students who disagree with assigning homework present many arguments.

First, they will lose time with their hobbies or playing with their friends. Consequently, they may
become unskillful students as they don’t have hobbies. Furthermore, they will become introvert since
they never play with friends.

Second, doing homework needs time, meaning they do not have much time to prepare the lessons
for the following days. Moreover, the submission time for homework coincides with tests. Of course,
nothing is learned or prepared properly. Consequently, they will not receive optimal marks.
Third, they have already been tired with school assignments and duties, so it’s time for them to have
a rest at home.

Fourth, students tend to copy their friends’ work, so the purpose of assigning homework is useless.

In my opinion, homework is important for students in order to learn materials they don’t do in class.
Besides, they can learn to manage their time and be independent. However, teachers should give
them homework in correlation with their time and capabilities.

GM Salmon Approved for Human Consumption in US

The fish, produced in Canada and Panama, has added hormone and grows twice as fast as
conventional salmon.

Genetically modified salmon has been approved for human consumption in the US and could hit
shelves in around two years.

The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) said the fish is safe for human consumption.

However, consumers may not realise they are consuming GM fish because the FDA says there are
no material differences between engineered and normal salmon and the law does not require fish to
be labelled as engineered.

The fish grows twice as fast as normal salmon and would take around two years to reach the
necessary size.

AquAdvantage Salmon is engineered by a Massachusetts-based AquaBounty. It says that GM

salmon has the same flavour, texture, colour and odour as conventional fish.

Ron Stotish, the company’s chief executive, said the fish is a “game changer that brings healthy and
nutritious food to consumers in an environmentally responsible manner without damaging the ocean
and other marine habitats”.

Critics have labelled the GM salmon “frankenfish” and warned it could cause human allergies and
may lead to the decimation of the natural salmon population if escaping into the wild.

that contains special cells, to sting, grip, or stick.

The purpose of the text is ....

to describe jellyfish in general

to amuse people about certain jellyfish

C
to relate people’s efforts to avoid jellyfish

to describe how to survive from jellyfish’ stings

to relate people's suffering when stung by Jellyfish

It was cloudy when the class ended. I was worried because I forgot to bring an umbrella or a
raincoat. So,
I hurried to the bus stop not far from school.

My bus arrived not long after, but that was the beginning of my problem. I couldn’t find my purse in
my bag when the conductor asked me for the fare. A boy sitting next to me said, “I think you have a
problem, but don’t worry. I’ll pay for you.” He gave money to the conductor. I smiled and said, "Thank
you. I will repay you if we meet again." He replied, "You don’t need to. We are neighbours, right?”

I was .so surprised knowing that he was my neighbour. How didn’t I notice him? He told me that he
knew everyone in the housing estate, including me, because they always meet once a month at the
youth organisation. He had sent me meeting invitations many times, but I never attended. On
hearing this, I blushed.

Since I met him, I have always attended youth meetings and met good people.

Which of the following has the same purpose as the above text?

A
A description of my house.

An invitation to attend a meeting.

What will happen if Earth’s temperature rises by up to 4°C?

Drought lasts longer and many people will die due to the unbearable heat.

Ice at the South' Pole will freeze too quickly.

Heavy rain will occur frequently.

More and more people will discharge carbon dioxide.

A lot of people will be healthier due to the abundant supply of oxygen.

“After finishing the homework, they, can measure whether they have mastered the materials they
have learned or not." (Paragraph 3)
What should students do when realising that their knowledge and skills are not yet good enough?

A
Ask teachers to stop giving them homework.
B

Share their problems with friends and teachers.

Reread the materials and redo the homework.

Sit in the front row so they can listen to teachers* explanations more clearly.

Arrive at school very early and read the materials before class.

Bali is very popular for its beautiful nature,, culture, crafts, dances and people. These make people
want to visit the island. When you go to Bali by plane, you will land at Ngurah Rai Airport. Do you
know who Ngurah Rai was? Lieutenant Colonel I Gusti Ngurah Rai was born in Carangsari Village,
Badung District, Bali, on the 30th January 1917. He is an Indonesian National Hero who
commanded the Indonesian forces in Bali against the Dutch during the Indonesian War of
Independence. He was killed in the Battle of Margarana.

Ngurah Rai studied at a Dutch elementary school and went to high school in Malang, East Java. He
then received Dutch military training at the Military Cadet School in Gianyar, Bali and Magelang,
Central Java. After graduating, he joined the Dutch-sponsored military as a second iieutenant in Bali.

After the Indonesian Declaration of Independence, he established the People’s Security Army, the
forerunner of the Military of Indonesia for the Lesser Sunda Islands. He then left for the republican
capital, Yogyakarta to receive orders before returning to Bali to oppose the approximately 2,000
Dutch troops that landed on 2nd and 3rd March 1946.

Ngurah Rai found that the republican forces were divided and he worked hard to unite them. He
organised the first attack against the Dutch forces' headquarters at Tabanan. The Dutch attempted
to locate Ngurah Rai’s base and offered negotiations, which he refused.

On 20th November 1946, the Dutch launched a large scale attack on Marga with the assistance of
troops from Lombok and supported by aircraft. Lt. Col Ngurah Rai ordered a Puputan, or fight to the
death. He died along with all of his troops. The battle is now known as the Battle of Margarana.

Ngurah Rai was buried in Marga. On 9th August 1975, he received the honour of National Hero.
Ngurah Rai International Airport in Bali is named after him and he appears on the IDR 50.000. note.

What is the Battle of Margarana called?

Once, there lived a good and wise king who was loved and respected by his people. The king was
old and it was time for him to hand over the throne to his successor, Prince Pratama. So, he called
his son and gave his mandate. Prince Pratama agreed to become the next king on two conditions;
first, the king would always teach him how to (X) ... the kingdom as a good, kind and wise king, and
second, he would learn about his people by mingling with them for as long as he wished. The king
agreed!

The next morning, Prince Pratama's life as a commoner began. He wore plain clothes and pretended
to be in need of a job. He met many rich merchants and farmers, but none of them gave him a job.
They claimed that they had already had many employees. They did not know that the man was their
prince, until one afternoon, he met a carpenter who gave him a job. The carpenter also did not know
that the sturdy and strong young man before him would be the next ruler of the kingdom. He gave
the prince many tiring jobs to finish. The prince did them as best he could. The carpenter was
satisfied with his spirit.

During the break, the prince asked the carpenter a lot of questions concerning people’s lives. He
also asked what the people wished from the king. The carpenter explained openly and (Y) .... He
complimented the king who was very attentive to his, people and was always ready to solve the
people’s problems. He wished his successor would also do the same, or more. After working for
three weeks, Prince Pratama left and promised to meet the carpenter one day.

On his inauguration, he invited all his people to the palace to enjoy the party. The carpenter was
shocked knowing that his king was the man who had worked for him. He knelt down before the king
and apologized. Prince Pratama who was now king asked him to rise and hugged him. He said, “Sir,
you were one of my teachers of life. You (Z) …. me many things, good and bad. Those teachings
are very beneficial for me to rule this kingdom. Because of your teachings and words, I know what
my people need.” On hearing this, all the audience applauded the new king. All were happy knowing
that the new king would be as good as the former king, or better.

What is the writer’s purpose for writing the text?

To amuse readers. ,

To describe the day the class ended.

To advise how to make friends.

To relate the writer’s experience.

To describe what her neighbour is like.

What was the king’s motive to act as if he was ill?

He was old enough to rule the kingdom.

He trusted his minister to rule the kingdom.

He would like to inaugurate the prince as the next king.

He wanted to know his minister’s real character.

It was the time for him to leave earthly life
