Introduction to Product Design and
Manufacturing
• Product design is conceptualization of an idea about a product
and transformation of the idea into a reality. To transform the
idea into reality a specification about the product is prepared.
This specification is prepared by considering different
constraints such as production process, customer expectation,
etc. In product design stage every aspects of the product are
analysed.

• Manufacturing is the process of converting raw materials,

components, or parts into finished goods that meet a
customer's expectations or specifications. Manufacturing
commonly employs a man-machine setup with division of
labour in a large scale production.
Stage of Engineering Design Process
• Research
• Design Requirements
• Feasibility
• Conceptualization
• Preliminary Design
• Detailed Design
• Design for Manufacturability
• Production Planning
Computer-aided Design(CAD)
• Computer-aided design (CAD) is the use of computer
systems to assist in the creation, modification, analysis,
or optimization of a design.
• CAD software is used to increase the productivity of
designer,improve the quality of design,improve
communications through documentation and to create a
database for manufacturing.
• CAD is an important indstrial art extensively ued in many
application including automotive,aerospace industries and
architectural design and many more.
Computer-aided Manufacturing(CAM)
• Computer-aided manufacturing (CAM) is the use of computer
systems to plan, manage, and control the operations of a
manufacturing plant through direct or indirect computer
interface with plant’s resources.

• CAM is a subsequent computer-aided process after CAD and

sometimes CAE,as the model generated n CAD and verified in
CAE can be input into CAM software, which then control the
machine tool.
Need for CAD/CAM
• To increase productivity of the designer
• To improve quality of the design
• To improve communications
• To create a manufacturing database
• To create and test tool paths and optimize them
• To help in production scheduling
• To have effective shop floor control
Computer-aided Engineering(CAE)
• Computer-Aided Engineering is the use of computer software
to solve engineering problems with the improvement of
graphics displays, engineering workstations, and graphics
standards.

• Engineers also use computer programs to estimate the

performance and cost of design prototypes and to calculate
the optimal values for design parameters. When combined
with CAD, these automated analysis and optimization
capabilities are called computer-aided engineering.
Goals of CAE
• Stress analysis on components and assemblies
• Analysis tools for process simulation for operation such as
casting,molding and die press forming.
• Optimization of the product or process.
• Improved product quality and safety
• Reduced engineering time, achieved through fewer design
iterations
• Improved product functionality and usability
• Reduced product cost
CATIA
• CATIA is also known as computer aided three dimensional
interactive application. CATIA was started in 1977 by French
Aircraft Manufacturer Avions Marcel Dassault System.

• CATIA enables the creation of 3D parts,from 3D

sketches,sheet metal,composites,molded,forged or tooling
parts up to the defination of mechanical assemblies.

• It is also used in aerospace, automotive, shipbuilding, and

other industries.
CATIA Workbenches
• Part Design Workbench
• Wireframe and Surface Design Work bench
• Assembly Design Workbench
• Drafting Workbench
• DMU Kinematics Workbench
• Freestyle Workbench
Features of CATIA
• Fillet
• Chamfer
• Hole
• Shell

Introduction to MASTERCAM
• Founded in Massachusetts in 1983, CNC Software

• Let machinists design virtual parts on a computer screen and

also guided computer numerical controlled (CNC) machine
tools in the manufacture of parts

• It has set of predefined tool path including contour, drill,

pocketing, face, peel mill, engraving, surface high speed,
advanced multiaxis and many more enable machinists to cut
parts efficiently and accurately
Benefits of Mastercam
• Mastercam users will recognize the shop-tested parameter screens
and processes. They will be able to jump right into Mastercam for
SOLIDWORKS and immediately feel familiar with it.
• SOLIDWORKS users will feel at ease with the machining tree,
which delivers quick access to any point in the machining process.
• When model changes occur, users can update toolpaths in seconds
instead of having to reprogram the part.
• Updates for Mastercam for SOLIDWORKS will be released on the
same cycle as the other products in the Mastercam family,
including enhancements to Feature Based Machining (FBM), high
speed cutting, and many other sought after toolpaths.
• Users can collaborate with other SOLIDWORKS users who are
working on the same project.
Computer numerical control(CNC)
• Computer numerical control(CNC) is the automation of
machine tools by means of computers pre-programmed
sequences of mahine control commands.

• A numerical control system in which the data handling, control

sequences, and response to input is determined by an on
board computer system at the machine tool.

• In modern CNC system, the design of a mechanicl part and its

manufacturing program is highly automated.
How CNC Works
• Controlled by G and M codes.
• These are number values and co-ordinates.
• Each number or code is assigned to a particular operation.
• Typed in manually to CAD by machine operators.
• G & M codes are automatically generated by the computer
software.
Features of CNC Machinery
• The tool or material moves automatically.
• Tools can operate in 1-5 axes.
• Larger machines have a machine control unit (MCU) which
manages operations.
• Movement is controlled by motors (actuators).
• Feedback is provided by sensors (transducers)
• Tool magazines are used to change tools automatically.
Cartesian Coordinate
• The G & M code positions are all based on a three
dimensional Cartesian coordinate system.

• G code or G programming language is mostly used for NC

programming language. G codes are used to command
specific movements of the machine, such as machine moves
or drilling function.

• M codes are miscellaneous machine commands that do not

command axis motion. All complete CNC program have a M
code in both the first and last line of code.
Work Methodology
• The work was planned according to the compatibility and
ease of manufacturing of the product.
1- Work Design
2- Finalization for machining
3- Acquistition of raw materials
4- Machining
Conclusion
From the project we have learned about CATIA software
and by using CATIA we made three model. Then we selected one
model which was transfered to Mastercam in which the tool
path was generated. Then it was transfered to CNC machine in
which the manufacturing process was happened and the final
product was formed. So, overaly we learnt about CATIA,
Mastercam and CNC machining from the project.
