Attainment Of COs, POs And PSOs

The process of attainment of COs, POs and PSOs starts from writing appropriate COs for
each course of the program from first year to fourth year in a four-year engineering degree
program. The course outcomes are written by the respective faculty member using action
verbs of learning levels suggested by Bloom’s Taxonomy.
Then, a correlation is established between COs and POs in the scale of 1 to 3, 1
being the slight (low), 2 being moderate (medium) and 3 being substantial (high). A
mapping matrix is prepared in this regard for every course in the program including the
elective subjects. The course outcomes written and their mapping with POs are reviewed
frequently by a committee of senior faculty members before they are finalized. The
following tables show the COs and the CO-PO mapping matrix for a sample course

Attainment of Cos

Course Outcomes are narrower statements that describe what students are expected to
know, and be able to do at the end of each course. These relate to the skills, knowledge, and
behavior that students acquire in their matriculation through the course.
In a university affiliated college, the CO attainment levels can be measured based on
the results of the internal assessment and external examination conducted by the university.
This is a form of direct measurement of attainment, two internal assessment tests are conducted for
each course in a semester.

Internal (Mid) Examinations & Assignments (R13)

Two Mid Examinations are conducted for students in each semester as per the university
prescribed norms. Mid-1 is conducted from first, second, third unit (50%) i.e. 2.5 units. The
question paper consisting of four questions are given each carrying 5 marks, out of which
students have to answer any two questions. 20 objective questions are given each carrying
0.5 mark. Mid-2 is conducted from remaining Third (50%), four and five units. Each question
is related to one or more Course Outcomes.

Assignment questions in each assignment are mapped to one or more Course

Outcomes. Two assignments are given in each course per sem est er.

Average of two Mid Examinations is considered for final Mid Examination Marks.

End Semester Examinations (R13)

The question paper consists of Part –A & Part-B. In Part –A, ten short questions are given,
carrying total marks 25. In Part –B, five essay questions are given each carrying 10 marks.
Each question is provided with a choice either to attend question A or B (example for 11th
question is 11 Q.No (A) or 11 Q.No (B)). Student need to answer five questions (5 Q*
10=50 MARKS).

It is expected that a student scores at least 50% of the maximum marks of the course
(i.e. 37.5 out of 75 Marks) for the attainment of Course Outcomes.

The marks scored by the students in the Internal (Mid) Examinations, Assignment and
End semester examination are considered to assess the attainment level of the whole course
and the Course Outcome attainment level.

Labs: For Labs, there is a continuous evaluation during the semester for 25 sectional marks.
Out of the 25 marks for internal, day to day work in the laboratory is evaluated for 15 marks
and internal examination for practical is evaluated for 10 marks conducted by the concerned
laboratory in charge. External lab examination is assessed for 50 marks. The internal
examiner along with external examiner evaluates the performance of the students in the lab
for external lab exam. The external examiner is appointed from the cluster of colleges as
decided by the examination branch.

The following formule illustrates the assessment criteria for the theory courses of all
semesters/years.

Procedure for setting Target level for course outcomes

 After calculating course outcomes for each course as stated above, target value or
set value is fixed taking CAYm3 as the base year.
 The set value is the average of all course outcomes for particular subject.
 The same set value is taken for both CAYm3 and CAYm2, taking the average
values in CAYm3
 If the target is achieved i.e., attained value is greater than set value, then for
CAYm1 the set value is increased by 10 percent, if not same set level is
maintained.
The following table illustrates set value and attained value for all courses
The following table illustrate the Set value and attained value of selected courses For convenience and simplicity, only few courses are shown:
