Introduction

Z+F IMAGER® 5006h

Chapter 1. Introduction
1.1. General
The Zoller + Fröhlich GmbH is one of the leading companies in the field of contact-
free laser measurement technology worldwide. Z+F is the manufacturer of the 3D-
Laser Scanning system Z+F IMAGER® 5006h.

Laser scanning is an automatic process during which real objects are surveyed and
sampled almost completely to determine their location, size, orientation and form. The
Z+F IMAGER® 5006h rapidly determines high-resolution measurement results within
very short time and within a field of view of max. 360° horizontal and 320° vertical
(about 40° are shadowed below due to the Laser scanner`s assembly and its tripod.
With a max. sampling rate of 1.016.000 pixel per second, the amount of generated
data can add up to theoretically 5 billion points per panoramic scan.

Of course it is possible to reduce the amount of data to later work with. The captured
data, three dimensional coordinates and intensity information of the scanned objects
can than be further post - processed, analyzed and evaluated, using special software,
like e.g. Z+F LaserControl®.

Z+F IMAGER® 5006h

Important
Never remove the 5006 Li-Ion Battery while the Z+F IMAGER® 5006h
is switched on.

Disconnecting the supply voltage while scanning, might result in loss

of data and crashing of the system.

If the Z+F IMAGER® 5006h is operated until the 5006 Li-Ion

Battery is completely empty (total discharge), it has to be recharged
immediately. Failure to do this can result in damage of the 5006 Li-
Ion Battery.

First usage / recharging the 5006 Li-Ion Battery

• Only use the corresponding 5006 Li-Ion Charger.

• The 5006 Li-Ion Battery must be charged prior to first usage.

• The permissible temperature range for charging is between 0°C to

+40°C/+32°F to +104°F.

• It is normal for the 5006 Li-Ion Battery to become warm during the
charging process. Using the chargers recommended by Z+F, it is
not possible to charge the 5006 Li-Ion Battery if the temperature is
too high – the charging process is aborted then.

Setting up the Z+F IMAGER® 5006h

Z+F IMAGER® 5006h

• If the 5006 Li-Ion Battery does only reach about 70% of its capacity although having
been charged properly, the 5006 Li-Ion Battery packs are exhausted (usually after
about 600-800 cycles) and must be replaced. Please contact Z+F support or your
distributor for the exchange.

• If the 5006 Li-Ion Battery is stored for a longer period of time, this should be done
when it is charged not more than 60-70% of its capacity (i.e. up to the third diode
indicated) on the 5006 Li-Ion Charger.

• After a longer period of storage, the 5006 Li-Ion Battery has to be recharged before
using it. As soon as the minimum level of the operating voltage of 12V-DC is
reached, the 5006 Li-Ion Battery has to be recharged.

3.3.1.2. Storing and transporting the 5006 Li-Ion Battery

Important
• It is not recommended to store a discharged 5006 Li-Ion Battery
(Caution of depth discharge). Storing the 5006 Li-Ion Battery pack
in such a state can damage it permanently.

• If stored, the 5006 Li-Ion Battery has to be recharged at least every

4.3. Positioning the Z+F IMAGER® 5006h
• Position of the Z+F IMAGER® 5006h in the centre of the target field. See that direct
clear view to the object that needs to be scanned is ensured.

• Ensure that the angle of incidence of the laser beam on the target is larger than 45°.
If you use “Z+F LaserControl®” for registration, it is automatically checked when
starting the target-finder if the target is well visible and can be recognized properly.
You're notified, if the angle of incidence is too steep.

• Self printed targets must have a minimum black/white contrast of 6:1 in the scan.
Please test this by frontal (angle 90°) scanning a target and analyse the contrast
of the target in your Software.

• The recommended distance between Z+F IMAGER® 5006h and a target (Size 210
mm x 298 mm) depends on the scan resolution.

Table 4.1. Recommended target distance (DIN A4 target)

Resolution with an with an with an

Preparing to scan

Z+F IMAGER® 5006h

Figure 4.4. Positioning the Z+F IMAGER® 5006h

4.4. Ambient conditions

4.4.1. Unfavorable surfaces

• Highly reflective (polished metal, anodized metal, gloss paint, mirrors)

• Translucent (clear glass, thermo isolated glass)

• Highly absorbent (black)

Tip
To improve the results of the measurement, such surfaces should be
colored or powdered.

4.4.2. Unfavorable weather conditions

• Surfaces that are directly illuminated by the sun have an increased range noise and
therefore a larger measurement uncertainty.

• If some objects are scanned against the sunlight or a bright spotlight, the optical
receiver of the Z+F IMAGER® 5006h can be dazzled so heavily that in this area no
measured data is recorded. A “black hole” appears in the reflectance image.

27
Preparing to scan

Z+F IMAGER® 5006h

Important
• Fog, rain or snow will cause poor measurement results, therefore
surveying during these conditions is not recommended!

• Protect the Z+F IMAGER® 5006h from rain.

• Don't use the Z+F IMAGER® 5006h during rain.

4.4.3. Extremely high / low temperatures

If the temperature is outside the calibrated range, an error message is displayed.
Scanning is still possible, but the measuring accuracy is no longer specified.

• Warm up / cool down the Z+F IMAGER® 5006h.

To avoid damaging the electronic parts of the Z+F IMAGER® 5006h, it switches off
if the upper temperature limit is exceeded.

• Cool down the Z+F IMAGER® 5006h at a cold place.

Important
If the Z+F IMAGER® 5006h is brought from cold into a warm and
humid environment, the glass window at the mirror or in extremely
cases even the interior optic can fog up. This may cause measurement
errors.

• Avoid large temperature differences and grant the

Z+F IMAGER® 5006h time to acclimate.

Important
Soiling the glass pane of the mirror (i.e. by a layer of dust, condensed
water or fingerprints) might cause considerable measuring errors.
Before measuring check the glass pane for soiling and clean it with
the cleaning set if necessary.

As soon as several scans of an object have been created,
you will find a file management system very helpful. Some
functions of the software are indispensable when working with
projects, for example for registering scans. All individual items
Project
of scan data in the project are administered in an XML file.
Choose a name for the project before you carry out the first
scan. Each subsequent scan is assigned to the created project
and saved in this project.

Every scan is assigned to a viewpoint (location of the

Z+F IMAGER® 5006h). If more than one scan is carried out
from a single viewpoint then they are all assigned to the same
viewpoint. As the transformation equation is the same for a
Scanposition common viewpoint this is very important for later registration.
(Viewpoint) Select a name for the viewpoint before you carry out the
first scan. If the viewpoint is not named by the operator, the
scanner assigns them automatically. (In the software Z+F
LaserControl®, the name of the view point can be edited
afterwards.)
