H ard work and dedication are part of the

trive to excel. But some people do not have that
drive to excel; others have so much of it that they
get involved in too many activitie and burnout.
With school, work, and other activities it becomes
ea y to get tired. Here the strive to excel may be
gone. The trive to ju t urvive has taken over.
It's not unu ual to occa ionally want to stay in
bed instead of going to school. Students that
come to school, except for only occasionally
taying in bed and go through the ha sle of
homework, job , activitie , and student life can
look back and proudly ay, 'We urvived 95! "

right? Wrong. Wham, bam, reality hits, cause you have to work right after
school, and for the re t of the weekend.
Growing up i all about building things. Whether it' relationship , financial
status or individual character you use the formulas you learn in school to survive
the working atmo phere. For some tudents they wouldn't know how to act if
they were just "students" everyday. For other the thought of working orne-

factor in growing up. Part of respon ibility include a lot of work.
Work i a word not many of us think of doing until graduating from
chool.. But then reality hits. It' amazing how much, money is a key factor
in today' ociety. Without money a person couldn't get gas, food, clothe , or

Lifting weights, jumping with weighted ropes, and lots of run-

This year's team was low on numbers, but high on experience.
This year was the first time in a while that all five starters were se-
niors. Dustin Larsen had this to say, "This was the best year of my
four years here. I'm glad to go out on a winning season." Besides
having a winning season this year's team won the Sportsmanship
trophy in the Blue and Gold Tournament and back to back confer-
ence road games at Willard and Republic. Hopefully the hard work
and spirit of this year's team will survive in the teams of the future.

Coach Bill Shewmaker didn't know what to

expect from his baseball team this past campaign.
Youth, inexperence, and lack of players contributed to
the doubt of the Bison's success.
With half of the roster compiled with fresh-
men, they had to mature quickly under the guidence
of the veteran upper classmen. After a slow start, the
young team gained confidence with impressive victo-
ries over C .0. C. foes Republic, 7-2, and Willard, 4-2.
The Bisons found themselves on a roll, racking up an
early 4-1 record in the conference and tied with Ozark
for first place . They were being lead by, SMSU
signee, John Hardin on the mound . The lone senior
on the team for the first half of the season, until Brad
Kern worked his way back from a basketball injury
which required shoulder surgury.
The Bison gained experience every game and
finished the season at 9-8, the first winning season in Shane Cody shows his silly smile.

first game of districts, losing to Bolivar 2-1. John Hardin was voted C.O.C. Player of the Year
Shane Cody and John Hardin were selected to with a 6-2 Record, 1.02 ERA, and 103 Strikeouts.
All-Conference First Team. Hardin had this to about
the season as a whole. " I was pleased with how the

replay, but overall, nine wins was a lot more than I

ART CLUB
A WAY OF EXPRESSING YOURSELF
STORY AND LAYOUT BY: TIM RAY

Art is a visual language. You are able to show your true feelings
by not even saying a word. Art is something that one person may
hate and another would think it was a masterpiece. A good thing
about art is that you don't have to be a naturally born at it to be
good. With all of the different tools that you are able to use you can
become a good artist by a lot of practice.
Art Club is made up of art I and advanced art students who like
to express themselves. Every year, Art Club travels to a major mu-
seum. Unlike years in the past when the club went to the Hallmark
Cards and the Nelson Art Museum in Kansas City, this year they
traveled to St. Louis to the St. Louis Art Museum. Which when you
get a group of creative minds on a bus for four very long hours you
are sure to have a good time.

in ' 1994 Football Festival Homecom

Story and Layout by: Stacy Carter

Football Festival started out

with Spirit Week. Activities in-
cluded a bonfire/car bashing, pep
rally and a parade before the
game. This year students and
organizations decorated shopping
carts instead of trailers. During
pre-game carnation, Amanda Rice
was crowned Football Festival
Queen. She was escorted by her
cousin, Billy Rice. Other candi-
dates were Brook Lauderbaugh
escorted by Eric Wingo, Alisha
Pyatt escort by Charlie Strickland,
and April Popejoy escorted by
Jason Heath.
This year celebrated the 20th
reunion in honor of the past foot-
ball players who competed for the
C.O.C title.

"If on Spirit Week, students dress up for Hillbilly

Day, but no one notice anyone looking any
different.. .......... we might be a redneck .. "
With rednecks sporting their finest overalls on
Wed day, Thur day proved to be rather Goofy on Di ney
Day. Concluding Spirit Week was the traditional Spirit
Day. The student body wa a mass of red, black, and
whites. Later that day there was a pep as embly held to
honor and support the boys basketball team. The week as
a whole can be described from a line in the festival's
theme song "You've got to kick a little to cau e a stir, you
got to make orne noise to b heard."
Again t Pleasant Hope that night the Bisons came
out slugish and found themselves down by nine at half-
time. During halftime Christy Miller wa crowned Queen
with her court consisting of Stacy Carter, Melinda Jones,
and Amy Fisher. The attendants were Jaymi Gilpin,
Heidi Strobel, and Tiffany Beckner. In the second half the
Bi ons roared back out coring the Pirates 18-4 in the third
quarter and went on to a 60-54 victory. Du tin Larsen
lead the way with 24 points, Kevin Cheek added 19.

With the spirit envolved in a festival, one just

wa n't enough. So the Student Council formed the very
first Basketball Festival game for the Lady Bison.
The Lady Bison ho ted the Willard Tiger and the
game was close and intense throughout, but the Lady
Bison prevailed by one, 61-60. At Halftime the lights
were turned down and a spotlight followed the canidates
across the floor. Keith Maddux was crowned Mr. Bi on
with his court consisting of Brad Kern, Jeremy Owen,
Robert Burns, and Kevin Maddux. The attendants were
Matt Kramer, Buster Carter, and David Dugan.

Who can best help teens deal

with their problems? Other peers!
The student body was polled to find out
who they would feel comfortable talk-
ing to about their problems. The group
was trained to help others deal with the
pressures in their lives.
Meetings were held periodically
throughout the school year. At each
meeting there was a guest speaker to
help improve the groups' skills. At the
end of the year the peer counselors
took a field trip to Lakeland Regional
Hospital and the Juvenile Detention

SENIOR
TRIP
Story and Layout by Matthew Charlton

The Buffalo High School1995 Senior

Class arrived at school at 7:00 on Friday, May 19
with exuberance, wonder, and many sleepers in
their eyes.
After being checked in and loaded on the
bus, we were on our way to Six Flags across
MidAmerica. Everyone excitedly looked
forword to the new Batman rollercoaster, but it
seemed to take forever to get there.
At last we arrived! Every last one of us
hurled ourselves off the bus and towards a day
full of good food, exspensive gifts, and long,
long lines. Next thing we knew, it was time to
find each other and cram ourselves back on the
bus, many of us with new stuffed friends or
small souvenirs to remember one of our most
exciting days together as a Senior class.

There's Jennifer enjoying her lunch with a mile.

April, Alisha, Amy, and Stacy enjoying the un!

T
.___ ____.his year the Buffalo
Junior-Senior prom was held at the Holi-
day Inn North in Springfield! Many stu-
dents stated that they hoped having prom
off campus was a growing tradition. This
was the second year that prom had been
away from the high school campus.
Students also commented on how nice the
Holiday Inn atrium was. Junior Kim
Hardin said, "Prom was a lot of fun, except
there wasn't enough chairs for everyone to
sit down." Junior Melissa Gilchrist added,
"I thought prom was a lot more fun than I Senior Brad Kern and Junior Amanda Dalhquist
had expected, especially after people
started dancing."

An overview of the Holiday Inn atrium!
