Name: Mary Hill

Name of theses/dissertation: Elementary Educators Perceptions of Conscience Discipline as a
Management Strategy
Year of Theses/dissertation:2017
University the author went to: University of Arkansas
Purpose of the study: “This study will benefit elementary teachers as they look for a useful
management strategy to implement in their classroom. We want to create a pool of educators
who feel confident in their abilities to handle stressful situations in the classroom. By surveying
the usefulness of Conscious Discipline in the classroom, we will be able to determine if it is a
viable management technique to implement in the classroom context.”
Conclusion of study: “According to the results of the survey, educators tend to agree Conscious
Discipline is a viable behavior management model to use in the classroom setting. There was no
significant difference based on differences in teacher demographics. Most teachers agree
students benefit from the program and teachers tend to have a positive opinion on the program.”
Why this matters to me: Because I am a future teacher, this dissertation matters to me because it
provided me viable strategies to run a classroom. Classroom management is difficult and differs
from teacher to teacher but this article proves that being conscience of our discipline and
critiquing what needs to be changed will benefit students.
What would I change:I truly believe Mary did an excellent job but this research could be biased
considering her sample size was very small. If I were performing this study, I would have
collected data from at least three school districts and did larger populations of teachers who
participated. I would have collected data from each district in NWA. Another thing that I would
change would be that I would make the survey mandatory to guarantee more participation. Since
the survey was optional, teachers did not feel the need to which could have hurt the data
significantly.
