NATIONAL FOREWORD

This Indian Standard ( Part 2 ) which is identical with IS0 4018 : 1988 ‘Hexagon head screws -
Product grade, C’, issued by the International Organization for Standardization ( IS0 ), was
adopted by the Bureau of Indian Standards on the recommendation of the Bolts, Nuts and
Fastener Accessories Sectional Committee ( LM 14 ) and approval of the Light Mechanical
Engineering Division Council.

The standard was originally published in 1960 and revised in 1967. Subsequent to the
publication of 1967 edition, many changes had been agreed upon at international level which
have been reflected in IS 1367 series of standards covering ‘Technical supply conditions for
threaded steel fasteners’. Accordingly, the standard was published in 3 parts covering hexagon
head bolts, hexagon head screws, hexagon nuts.
The second revision of the standard was based on IS0 4018 : 1979 ‘Hexagon head screws -
Product grade, C’ issued by ISO. This third revision has been ma& by the adoption of
latest version of IS0 4018 published in 1988 as Part 2. The remaining parts of the standard,
that is, Parts 1 and 3 have also been revised by adoption of corresponding latest version of
international standards ( ISOs). The following major changes have been made in this revision:
a) The range of sizes has been enlarged to cover sizes from M5 to M64;
b) The range of nominal lengths has been extended up to 500 mm;
c) Non-preferred sizes have been included in separate table in line with IS0 4018;
d) The use of property class 3.6, is also permitted subject to the agreement between the
manufacturer and user.
In the 1967 version of this standard, the width across fla,ts for Ml0 and Ml2 size fasteners was
specified as 17 mm and 19 mm respectively. However, in the 1983 version this width across
flats was brought in line with IS0 4018 : 1979 and specified as 16 mm and 18 mm respectively
for Ml0 and Ml2 size fasteners. Recognizing the fact that the new width across flat dimensions
could not be implemented immediately, the Explanatory Note to 1983 version Of the standard
made a reference to this aspect. However, in the absence of specific coverage in the standard,
the new width across flat dimensions could not be implemented. Recognizing the difficulty of
immediate changeover to new width across flats, the Committee felt that definite time frame
may be given to the manufacturers for changeover and accordingly, it has been decided that
width across flats as per 1967 version, i.e. 17 mm and 19 mm for Ml0 and Ml2 size fasteners
shall be permitted till 31 December 1994.
It is also understood that some manufacturers are already equipped and manufacturing as per
new width across flat dimensions and supplies as per new specifications are encouraged.
During this period, the manufacture of fasteners as per old version shall be phased out and by
1 January 1995, it is expected that the entire fastener industry would have switched over to
new width dimensions across flat and no old width across flats shall be permitted.
In the adopted standard, certain terminology and conventions are not identical with those
used in Indian Standards; attention is specially drawn to the following:
a) Wherever the words ‘International Standard’ appear, referring to this standard, they
should be read as ‘Indian Standard’; and
b) Comma ( , ) has been used as a decimal marker while in Indian Standards the current
practice is to use point ( . ) as the decimal marker.

0 Introduction

This International Standard is part of the complete IS0 product standard s&ies on hexagon drive fasteners. The series comprises:

a) hexagon head bolts (IS0 4614, IS0 4015, IS0 4016 and IS0 87651;

bt hexagon head screws (IS0 4017, IS0 4018 and IS0 8676);

c) hexagon nuts (IS0 4632, IS0 4033, IS0 4634, IS0 4635, IS0 4636, IS0 8673, IS0 8674 and lS0 8675);

d) hexagon flanged bolts (IS0 4162 and IS0 8102);

e) hexagon flanged screws; ‘)

f) hexagon flanged nuts (IS0 4161, IS0 7043 and IS0 7044);

g) structural bolting (IS0 4775, IS0 7411 to IS0 7414 and IS0 7417).

1 Scope and field of application

This international Standard gives specifications for hexagon head screws with threads from M5 up to and including M64, of product
grade C.

NOTE - This type of product is the same as that covered by IS0 4016 with the exception of threading up to the head.

If, in special cases, specifications other than those listed in this International Standard are required, they should be selected from
existing International Standards, for example IS0 261, IS0 888, IS0 898-1, IS0 9662 and IS0 4759-l.

1 b These will form the subject of future International Standards.
