Introduction
Wärtsilä Services received reports concerning fuel pump roller and cam damage
on RT-flex82C and RT-flex82T engines in service. Wärtsilä Services 2-stroke is
currently investigating the root cause in order to find a solution to solve the
problem.
In some cases damage was detected which had been caused by a blocked oil
supply to the regulating sleeve and fuel rack system. It showed that the blocked
oil supply was caused by foreign particles.
Until further notice, all customers with RT-flex82C and RT-flex82T engines in
operation are requested to check the oil flow on the fuel pump according to the
given information in this Service Letter. Following the given recommendation
shall prevent any further similar damage.
Important:
It is strongly requested that you send your feedback report to Wärtsilä Services
2-stroke for further follow-up.

For engines still under warranty, please report the case also to the Customer
Support Department of the respective engine builder for quick handling.

Work procedure
1. Engine must be at standstill
2. Stop the main lubricating oil pump
3. Remove the oil return pipe (3) from all fuel pumps (1)
4. Run the main lubricating oil pump
5. Turn the turning gear in AHEAD direction
6. After a few minutes of turning, oil flow (4) should be visible from the return
pipes (3)
If no oil is flowing out of a certain fuel pump return pipe, the respective fuel
pump should be separately checked.
7. The crankshaft should be turned until the roller of the respective fuel pump is
on the cam peak.
If after one minute no oil flow is noticed, it might be an indication that the oil
supply is blocked by foreign particles.
8. It is recommended to cut off the blocked fuel pump according to the instruction
in the Operating Manual Group 5, Chapter 5556-2.
Attention:
Please report the case to Wärtsilä Services and to the respective engine builder.

Parts to be monitored
Monitoring fuel rail pressure if any abnormal alarm is indicated:
– Fuel rail pressure high, for example
Monitoring movement of fuel rack:
– Check if any fuel rack is sticking
Monitoring behaviour of fuel pump actuator, check for:
– Abnormal alarm
– Any discrepancy, for example hunting of actuator
Note:
For more details to the monitoring of fuel pressure, fuel rack and fuel pump
actuator; please consult the Operating Manual Group 0, Chapter 0515-1
“Operation under Abnormal Conditions – Faults in High Pressure Fuel System”.
