8. PROCEDURE
8.1. Survey
A survey of all the cases shall be made, noting the size of the openings and locations.

8.2. Type I Defect

The opening is located below a structural element such as; a slab, a bond beam or a drop beam.
1. In these cases no rectification is necessary.
2. The perimeter of the required location with be cut with a concrete grinder and the area in which the bloc work is not
required is demolished without causing undue damage to the adjacent area which has to be retained.

8.3. Type II Defect

In this type of defect there are many courses of blocks between the opening and the structural element and electrical conduits
are passing through the opening.
1. The perimeter of the required location with be cut with a concrete grinder and the area in which the bloc work is not
required is demolished without causing undue damage to the adjacent area which has to be retained.
2. Temporary supports will be provided to the block work above the newly created opening by jacks.
3. In this case a cast in situ lintel shall be provided. If required the opening shall size shall be increased to accommodate
the columns and the lintel.

centre to centre).

Fig.3
6. Fig.3 Lintel reinforcement shall be tied as per the bond column detail shown in IFC Drawing S-001 (copy attached)
and the lintel beam shall be cast on top of the columns.

8.4. Type III Defect

1. This type of defect is same as Type II except that there are no electrical conduits crossing the opening. In this case
precast pre-stressed lintels shall be used instead of cast-in-situ lintels. Details of the selection of precast pre-stressed
lintels are in material submittal for Precast Prestressed Concrete lintel.
2. The column shuttering shall be fixed and the precast pre-stressed concrete lintel shall be placed in position and
jacked up. The columns shall be cast with the lintel in place (see Fig.4 & 5).

8.5. Concrete Curing

All cast concrete shall protected from drying in hot, dry and windy weather, so that the curing process to be started as soon
as possible after formwork removal.
Newly cast area will be cured by placing wet Hessian cloth (burlap) and comply with specification section 03310.

9. HEALTH, SAFETY AND ENVIRONMENT

1. Wearing of hard hats will be rigorously enforced during the demolition of the block work.
2. All precaution to prevent the collapse of the clockwork before the lintels have gained strength has to be taken.
3. The area around the opening should be secured by warning tape until the lintel has gained strength
4. During the use of the grinder and the demolition equipment goggles for eyes, dust mask will be used
5. The labours will be working on chemical materials must wear gloves and necessary protection gear.
