Molar Mass Lab Name: ______________________ Moles

rule!

Around the room you will find several stations with different items at them. Follow the
directions for each station in order to gain practice in molar calculations.

Station 1 – Determine the number of molecules in a mouthful of water

1. Obtain a cup of water and record its mass here: ____________

2. Drink one mouthful of water, then take the mass of the cup again and record here: _________
Calculations:

1. How many grams of water did you drink?

2. Determine the molecular mass of water.

3. How many moles of water did you swallow?

4. How many molecules of water are in 1 mole?

5. How many molecules of water did you swallow?

Station 2 – Determine the number of chalk molecules required to write your name

1. Obtain a piece of chalk and record its mass here: ____________

2. Use the chalk to write your name on a piece of paper, then take the mass of the chalk again and record
here: _________
Calculations:

1. How many grams of chalk did you use?

2. Determine the molecular mass of chalk (CaCO3).

3. How many moles of chalk did you use?

4. How many molecules of chalk are in 1 mole?

5. How many molecules of chalk did you use to write your name?

Station 3 – Determine the identity of an unknown metal

1. Obtain a rod of unknown metal (#______) and record its mass here: ____________
2. Add 50 mL of tap water to a graduated cylinder, add the rod and record the volume here________
3. Find the volume of the rod by subtracting 50mL from the final volume. _________
Calculations:
1. What is the density of the unknown metal? (remember “density breaks my HEART”)

2. Using the density of metals chart at the station, what do you think the unknown metal is?

3. Using the mass obtained in step 1, how many moles of metal do you have in your sample?

4. How many atoms of the metal are contained in your rod?

Station 4 – Determine the identity of unknown compounds –sodium chloride and lithium chloride.

1. Obtain a sample of 1 mole of unknown #1 and record its mass here: ____________
2. Obtain a sample of 1 mole of unknown #2 and record its mass here: ____________

Calculations:
1. Calculate below the molar mass of both sodium chloride and lithium chloride.(show work below!!)

Molar mass of sodium chloride:

Molar mass of lithium chloride:

2. Knowing that the amount in the bag is equal to one mole, which compound is which? circle
Unknown #1: Sodium chloride or Lithium chloride
Yeah,
Unknown #2: Sodium chloride or Lithium chloride we do!
