Parts of the World – Lesson Plan

Overview
 The students will be able to:

o list and locate the continents that make up the world

o learn how our world is organized to better find exact locations.

o understand why it is important to be able to find a specific geographical location.

o use a world map to find a specific location

Objective(s) and Standards

Goal 2.1: Analyze the spatial organizations of people, places, and environment on the earth’s
surface.

Objective(s): By the end of Grade 4, the student will be able to:

4.SS.2.1.2 Show on a map of the world the continents, oceans, landforms, poles, hemispheres,
equator, and prime meridian in relation to Idaho.

Anticipatory Set
The students will be asked if they know how many continents there are, if they can name the
continents, and if they feel they would be able to place the continents on a blank map. After the
students answer the questions, the teacher will place a blank poster board in the front of the
classroom with just the equator labeled.

Outline
The students will be chosen to come up to the board to use sticker labels to label North, East,
South, West, and each continent and ocean. As they place the continents on the board, other
students are allowed to raise their hands to disagree with placement.
Once the poster is complete, the teacher will complete the poster board by marking with colored
tape the hemispheres and the equator.
The teacher will then label the United States of America, and ask the students to raise their hands
to ask if they know where their state is (Idaho).

Closure/Check for Understanding

The students will then be handed out their own blank white piece of paper as well as a sheet with
cutouts of each named continent, ocean name, pole names, and cutout of Idaho. They will be
given rolls of colored tape to label their hemispheres and equator. They will be asked to take out
