Rationale for Standard 5: Innovative Applications of Content
Artifact name: Global Warming
Standard:
The teacher understands how to connect concepts and use differing perspectives to engage
learners in critical/creative thinking and collaborative problem solving related to authentic
local and global issues.
What the Standard means to me:
In order for the students to get passionate about their learning, they need to interact with
something that they can relate to. Students will be engaged in their learning if the educator is
providing them realworld critical and creative thinking that allows them to be problem
solvers.
Indicator:
5 (b) Engages learners into taking what they have learned from a lesson and connecting it to
their life and what is happening around them.
Description of the artifact:
During our air and weather unit, I wanted to provide the students with critical thinking and
problemsolving lessons that involve the world around them. I did a read aloud on global
warming and then talked to the students about the different ways that global warming is
affecting us. After talking about what global warming is and its effects, we then brainstormed
some of the different things we could do to help prevent global warming and save our Earth. I
then gave the students a piece of paper where they drew a picture and wrote down one thing
that they were going to try and do in order to help our Earth.
Rationale:
Throughout this lesson, the students and I explored global warming and its effects around us.
We engaged in a read aloud, discussion, and small activity in order to try and tackle this
problem together. I made it clear that this is not a problem we can solve all on our own, but by
us taking small steps, we are getting closer to helping the problem. The students came up with
creative ideas of what they were going to do to help, and they had a lot of things to say about
how this connected to their lives outside of school. It was clear by the discussion and their
work that they were engaged in this lesson and they enjoyed learning about something that
they could take home and talk to their parents about. This activity shows that I can engage
learners in a lesson that connects to their life outside of school.
