Truth and Reconciliation Philosophies

“I believe that students should be educated in an environment that openly


discusses and actively works towards reconciliation in Canada”.

 By educating students of the struggles that Aboriginal groups faced


throughout the history of what is now Canada, we can ensure that nothing
like this will happen again.

“I believe that students and teachers need an open space to broaden their
knowledge on Indigenous cultures and nullify the existing stereotypes that
still exist today”.

 As a classroom, research can be done, we can get involved, attend events


and invite speakers into our classroom to ensure we are obtaining quality
information regarding our education on reconciliation.

“I believe that students need access to a diverse curriculum that allows


them to actively engage in issues surrounding social injustices”.

 By facilitating these discussions in our classrooms, students will then share


their knowledge with outside groups, thus spreading the truth to parties
outside of the school setting.

“I believe that students need to be educated on the value of differing


cultures in order to understand the importance of reconciliation”.

 By learning the experiences of different cultures, we can see the strengths in


them. The same as we see the strengths in our students, we can see the
strengths in various groups, thus shutting down stereotypes through
academia.

“I believe that students need to be educated on the truth.”.

 By learning the truth students in result learn about respect, responsibility


and the justice that occurs when you do not hold back information when
discussing uncomfortable subjects.

“I believe that as much as possible, we need to let Aboriginal people


speak their own stories”.

 By telling the stories of others, facts are lost or misspoken. By allowing a


culture to speak for itself, we gain knowledge that is truly authentic.
