CHAPATER 1

INTRODUCTION

INTRODUCTION OF INTERNSHIP

Internship (project) is a creative endeavour to connect the gap between knowledge and its
application through a series of involvement that will enable us to gain insights and exposure
to the industry. The 4 week project work has been scheduled for the second semester as it
serves the twin purpose of providing critical trade insights to us as well as providing industry
with graduates of high capability who are ready to get ahead in the world from day one.
Internship exists in wide variety of industry and setting.

Generally, an internship consists of an exchange of services for experience between the

student and an organization. Students can also use an internship to determine if they have an
interest in a particular career, to create a network of contacts, to acquire a recommendation
letter to add to their curriculum vitae, or to gain school credit. Some interns find permanent,
paid employment with the organizations for which they worked upon completion of the
internship. This can be a significant benefit to the employer as experienced interns often need
little or no training when they begin regular employment. It also helps an employer in
gauging a student's aptitude, since grade inflation has undermined the reliability of academic
grades. Unlike a trainee program, employment at the completion of an internship is not
guaranteed.

It is an opportunity that employers offer to students interested in gaining work experience in

particular industries. With this primer, learn more about what internships are and why
students benefit from them.

The position of a student or trainee who works in an organization, sometimes without pay, in
order to gain work experience or satisfy requirements for a qualification

OBJECTIVES OF INTERNSHIP

 Hands-on experience to include: personal training; fitness assessments; nutritional

analysis; time and stress management; interpersonal skills; group exercise teaching;
presentations; organization of special events; budgeting; marketing; liability and risk
management; paperwork; equipment ordering, maintenance, cleaning and repair;
responding to emergencies as well as membership recruitment and retention.
 Mentoring from the internship supervisor and Fitness Centre director.
 Opportunities to network in the field, attend conferences and workshops, and are
affiliated with national organizations.
 Professional communication including meetings, memos, client interaction, input of
ideas, and confidentiality.
 Develop a general knowledge and understanding of fitness centre/health club
management, including duties and responsibilities of clerical staff.
 Lead a college class in an exercise program.
 Design effective, scientifically based resistance training and exercise aerobic
programs for all age groups and abilities.

CHARACTERISTICS OF INTERNSHIP

 STABILITY AND CONGRUENCY OF THE ORGANIZATION

It is extremely important for the employer to boniest with the interns about the type and
nature of job. A lot of aggressive marketing companies are, as of late, advertising their door-
to-door sales job as ‘management’ positions. This consequently brings about bad reputation
for the organization. Presenting a program verbosely doesn’t decrease its value, and can assist
you in screening for the best qualified individuals who are interested in doing the actual job.

 SERVING THE INTERN NEEDS

The foremost criterion that any student considers before evaluating an internship program is
its ability to match their personal objectives and needs. The structure of an Internship
program in terms of its flexibility or level of commitment can play a significant role for
students in determining whether or not they want the internship. While it may be difficult for
GOVERNMENT FIRST GRADE COLLEGE VIJAYANAGARA Page 2
Internship study on Sree Sai Mitra Industry

the employers to control these aspects, transparency in job postings may help you get the best
fit.

 SENSE OF BELONGING

It’s crucial for the interns to get the ‘insider’ treatment to get their optimal performance. In
addition to offering a meaningful job, employers should include the interns in employee
activities to develop a certain sense of belonging for the interns with their assigned jobs.

 ACCESS TO TRAINING AND SUPERVISION

Interns need to have an access to both training and supervision due to their limited
experience. There is nothing more frustrating for the interns than to feel lost or left out.
Effective training that holistically guides the new hires through what is expected of them
along with an immediate supervisor that interns know they can turn to, can vastly help the
interns.

 CONSTRUCTIVE FEEDBACK

Most students and recent graduates are eager to learn. The best way to gain the most of their
performance is highlighting it through constructive feedback. Highly rated Internships offer
structured, regular, and constructive feedback to the interns that highlight their strengths and
weaknesses so that the interns may learn and grow as an employee.

 GROWTH OPPORTUNITIES

Interns are inclined towards the opportunities that have a future. Most students look for
growth opportunities and career development when looking for an internship.

TYPES OF INTERNSHIP

1. TIME OF YEAR.

Internships tend to run the duration of an academic semester or quarter (although they can run
longer), or over a summer or winter break. Therefore, based on the time of year, the basic
types of internships are semester internships, quarterly internships, summer internships, fall
internships, spring internships, and holiday or winter internships that is over a winter break.

2. INDUSTRY.

Internship programs are also classified by industry; this usually corresponds with the interns'
majors. While there are obviously hundreds of possibilities, some of the most common
include marketing internships, advertising internships, finance internships, entertainment
industry internships, legal internships, technology internships, fashion internships, PR
internships, and publishing internships.

3. PAID VERSUS UNPAID INTERNSHIPS.

There are legal ramifications and blurred lines regarding whether it is permissible to employ
interns without pay (most depend on meeting the legal definition of "intern"). For now,
however, it's sufficient to say that paid internships and unpaid internships are another method
of classification.

4. CREDIT VERSUS NO-CREDIT INTERNSHIPS.

For-credit internships and not-for-credit internships is another type of categorization, as it's a

common misconception that internships are always in exchange for college or university
credit.

In actuality, internships can be part of academic coursework; however, they can also be part
of an individual's extracurricular plan to gain experience. When an internship is performed in
exchange for college credit, the assigning of credit is strictly between the student and his or
her school.

INTERNSHIP DURATION

FROM 24.07.2017 TO 19.08.2017 FOR 4 WEEKS doing internship from SREE SAI MITRA
INDUSTRY

This project is carried out in, SREE SAI MITRA INDUSTRIES FOR UPVC PIPES
MANUFACTURING COMPANY, CHINTAMANI, in this industry works for the purpose of
giving Quality of products and services for the customers.

TITLE OF STUDY

The organizational study about the “SREE SAI MITRA INDUSTRIES” For UPVC PIPES
manufacturing company, CHINTAMANI.

INTRODUCTION INDUSTRY PROFILE

Project brief

Un plasticized polyvinyl chloride (abbreviated as UPVC) was first developed in the 1930’s
and came to be used in pressure pipelines from the 1950’s, firstly in Europe, followed by the
united states and then Australia in the 1960’s, the product has now developed to a mature
status with known and respected performance history in pipeline applications,

UPVC is a low maintenance material. It is used in the agriculture, chemical and construction
industry. It is available in a variety of colours and finishes. The photo-effect wood finish of
Un plasticized polyvinylchloride is also used in window frames and window sills as a
substitute for printed wood.

The most common use of UPVC is to make pipes. The pipes are most commonly used for the
purpose of drainage and for protecting or containing the cables in the buildings.

HISTORY

The 1970’s saw PVC pipes used for freeway drainage and the manufacture of plastic cable
ducts. During the 1980’s, a manufacturing process of stretching the PVC pipes while warm
improved the PVC pipes by making them stronger and more resistant. This allowed the PVC

Internship study on Sree Sai Mitra Industry

pipes to be made with thinner walls, increased flexibility, reduced weight whilst keeping
pressure class and therefore, reducing the raw material required to manufacture h PVC pipes.
These PVC pipes are called oriented PVC (PVC-O).

The 1990’s and millennium brought PVC pipes to be used for under floor heating, a variety
of commercial applications as well as hot and cold water applications replacing copper with
PVC pipes.

PVC pipes have been used for over 50years in Australia for pressure and non-pressure piping
applications. A CSIRO analysis has reported that PVC pipes are the best performing pressure
water pipe system in Australia. PVC pipes are used in a lot of sewer pipe system as they
resistant to corrosion, strong and easy to handle and join. Waste water infrastructures
throughout Australia are now using PVC pipes to remove waste water and deliver fresh water
due to their outstanding performance. Studies have reported that PVC pipes can have lifespan
of over 100years.

TECHNOLOGY AND INFRASTRUCTURE

Raw material technology:

Dedicated resources to find and research new generation polymers and additives from across
the world with a view to continues enhancement of physical properties, product performance,
process ability along with optimized economics and reduced environment impact.

AN OVERVIEW ON INDIAN PIPE INDUSTRY

 India ranks 8th in the world in total plastic consumption.

 Continues advancement in polymer technology, processing machineries, expertise, and
cost effective manufacturing is a fast replacing the typical materials in different segments
with plastics.
 The Indian pipe industry is among the top three manufacturing hubs after Japan and
Europe.
 The penetration level of pipelines oil and gas transportation is low @32 % in India as
compared to 59% in USA and 79% globally. However lower penetration levels represent
the huge scope for growth for the pipe industry.
 Share of Indians plastics products is about 0.5% of Indian’s GDP.
 These companies depend heavily on imports and hence many companies have
integrated backward to reduce dependency on imports and price volatility.
 The industry is highly raw material (RM) intensive with the RM cost accounting for
more than 70% of the total cost for steel and PVC pipe companies.
 The export of plastic products also yields about 1% of the country’s exports.
 The sector has a large presence of small scale companies in the industry. Which account
more then50% turnover of the industry and provide employment to an estimate of about
0.4 million population in the country.
 Approximately ₹100 billion are invested in the form of fixed assets in the plastic
processing industry.

UPVC PIPES: (Un plasticized polyvinyl chloride pipes)

The Indian pipes industry has been showing rapid growth since past several years and the
major reason for the growth of this industry is increasing demand for the pipes in the
irrigation sectors. The demand for plastics pipes such as PVC and UPVC is also increasing
this pipes are better in quality and durability infrastructures development ,urbanization and
the subsequence development of residential and industry construction are facilitating the
growth of the pipes industry.

UPVC is known as having strong resistance against chemicals, sunlight and oxidation from
water.

UPVC has chemical resistance across its operating temperature range, with a broad band of
operating pressure. Due to its long term strength characteristics, high stiffness and cost
effectiveness, UPVC system account for large proportion of plastic piping installation.

McKinsey 7s model is a tool that analyzes firm’s organizational design by looking 7s internal
elements: strategy, structure, systems, shared values, style, staff and skills, in order to identify
if they are effectively aligned and allow organization to achieve its objective.
McKinsey 7s model was developed in 1980s by McKinsey consultants tom peters, Robert
waterman and Julien Philips with a help from Richard Pascal and Anthony G. Anthos Since
the introduction, the model has been widely used by academics and practitioners and remains
one of the most popular strategic planning tools. It sought to present an emphasis on human
resources (soft S), rather than the traditional mass production tangibles of capital,
infrastructure and equipment, as a key to higher organizational performance

An internship with a company, which is well established, is a brilliant source of knowledge. I

will be able to physically feel and experience the concepts that I have learned throughout my
life. This provides me a chance to reflect upon what I have learned till now. On the other
hand, I will be able to gain some very important insights of working with senior officials in
reality. I would be able to utilize their experience as a guide to correct my mistakes and to
rediscover more skills that will be useful.
The works related to the company plays as an opportunities where they have given the
assignments directly related to an area of study or career interest.
