4. Method / Procedure
Synthesization of PANI

1. In preparation of 0.1 M HCl solution, 10 ml of HCl was added into 100 ml deionized
water inside measuring cylinder and stirrred by using glass rod.
2. 2 mL of aniline was obtained via pipette method and mix with 1 M HCl solution
prepared earlier.
3. Both aniline and 1 M HCl solution was added and stirred inside beaker.
4. Mechanical stirrer was set up and ice bath was prepared in suitable container.
5. The solution was stirred for 30 minutes with 500 rpm stirring speed.
6. 6 g of APS is weighed in a beaker.
7. 2 mL of aniline was obtained via pipette method and mix with 1 M HCl solution
prepared earlier.
8. After 30 minutes of stirring, solution of APS was added drop by drop into the aniline
solution.
9. After colour change was observed from colourless to light green, change the stirring
speed to 260 rpm.

JSA FORM revision 8 ( Feb 2017) 2

10. After the APS solution was completely used up, let the solution stirred for 5 hours
with temperature in ice bath maintained low at 5 oC.
11. The solution then filtered by using Buchner filtration setup. The filtrate then scraped
from the filter paper and transferred in a beaker.
12. The filtrate then washed by using methanol and filtered again.
13. Step 11 to 12 is repeated by using deionized water.
14. The filtrate (PANI) then placed in petri dish and dried in oven for 24 hours at 60
o
C.
15. The product then placed in dessicator.

PANI-ZnO Methodology

1. 6 g of Zinc oxide nanoparticle (ZnO NPs) (13 nm) is disperse in 50 mL of distilled

water containing 40 mg of sodium dodecyl sulphate (Na-SDS) under
ultrasonication for 20 min.
2. The solution will be stir for overnight (8-12 hrs) at room temperature.
3. 2 mL of Aniline monomer (ANI) and 0.5 mL of 1M HCl (as a dopant) add to the
suspension.
4. The ratio that be use between ZnO NPs & ANI was 3:1 (m/m).
5. 114 mg of Ammonium persulfate ((NH3)2S2O8) with 5 mL of distilled water is add
into the system as an oxidant to initiate polymerization.
6. The mixture will be stir for 3 hrs in an ice/water bath.
7. ZnO/PANI were recover by centrifugation and rinses several times with water &
ethanol.
8. The sample are dry in 50 ᵒC for 24 hrs.
9. Finally, the ZnO/PANI was deprotonated with a 0.1 M Ammonium hydroxide
(NH4OH) solution and stir it for 24 hrs.
10. The product is then washed several times with water and dried at 50 ᵒC for another
24 hrs.

Thermogravimetric Analysis

1. 2 mg sample placed in aluminium pan

2. Heating rate is set up to 10 Co/min
3. Starting temperature at 25 Co until 600 Co
4. Nitrogen gas is used in atmosphere with a flow rate of 60mL/min

JSA FORM revision 8 ( Feb 2017) 3

Fourier-Transfrom Infrared Spectroscopy
1. 2 mg of dry PANI-ZnO-Latex pressed into pellet
2. Samples pressed using pottasium bromide disk technique
3. The spectrum accumulation of 64 scans and resolution of 4 cm-1

Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM)

1. PANI is grounded into powder
2. PANI is coated with lead sputter
3. Voltage used is 5kV-15kV

Differential Scanning Calorimetry (DSC)

1. Approximately 10 mg of sample is weighed
2. The scan rate used is 10 oC/min within temperature range of 100 to 150 oC
3. The analysis carried under nitrogen atmosphere.

Determination of Tensile Properties

1. The specimen condition is must 16 hour within 23 oC to 27 oC.
2. The tensile test will be conducted in standard laboratory MS ISO 37:1998 method
at room temperature using Testing machine of model Lyyod Instrument LR30K
with speed at least 500 mm/min and load cell of 1kN.
