RESISTORS IN SERIES AND IN PARALLEL ARRANGEMENTS

PERFORMANCE OBJECTIVE:
Upon successful completion of this experiment, the student will be able to:
• Measure the resistance of this series combination of the resistors.
• Measure the resistance of the parallel combination of the resistors.

EQUIPMENTS:
• Decade resistance
• box Digital
• multimeter
• Connecting leads
NOTE:
• Take care of the equipment. They can be damaged by misuse.
• Before switch on your circuit please get it checked by you teacher.

DISCUSSION:

1. Resistors in Series:
The circuit in which resistors are connected end to end so that the same current (I) flows through all
the resistors when the number of resistors is connected in series, the total resistance is equal to the
sum of individual resistors.
• The total resistance of the series circuit is always greater than the largest of the resistance.
• If n resistors, each of R, are connected in series, the total resistance equals to nR.

2. Resistors in Parallel:
The circuit in which one end of each resistor is joined to common point and the other end of each resistor
is joined to another common point so that there are as many paths for current to flow as the number of
the resistors.
• The total resistance of the parallel circuit is always less than the smallest of the resistance.
• If n resistors, each of R, are connected in parallel, the total resistance equals to R/n.

EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE:
• Make the connection of resistors in series
• Make the connection of resistors in parallel.
• Set the multimeter to its resistance range according to resistance of decade boxes as are given by
your teacher.
TEST RESUTS:
• By using multimeter measure, the total resistance of resistors in series and record the
readings.
• With the help of multimeter measure the total resistance of resistors in parallel and record
readings.

2. Write the properties of series connection?

3. Write the properties of parallel connection?

FINAL CHECKLIST:

1. Check your equipment materials and work benches before you leave.
2. Return all equipment and materials to their proper storage area.
3. Submit your answers to questions.
