1.0 Introduction

The scope of this manual is to provide the essential information for the installation and
maintenance of Vertical Liquid, Model FPVS-SH.

FPMCS multi tube separators are the most suitable for the applications where the process gas
contains dry particulates, liquid particulates, or combination of both. They are used both at well
head and at the inlet of the compressor stations where the expense and maintenance challenges of
complex filters are not desired, or as an effective pre filter knock out unit to protect sensitive
coalescing filters. Vertical liquid separator contains a pre defined number of cyclones arranged on
the bottom tube sheet. Separation takes place in these cyclones through the principle of centrifugal
action. The main advantages of Vertical liquid separators are following, high efficiency separation
of entrained solid particulates and / or liquid mist, capacity to handle heavy solid loading or liquid
slugs, self cleaning & low maintenance requirement.

The basic principle behind the cyclone is, as the gas flows into the two entrance slots of each
cyclone, the tangential velocity imparted develops a centrifugal force action on the gas and
entrained particles. Since the entrained material is much heavier than the gas, this material is thrown
to the cylindrical walls of the lower portion of the tube. By gravitational action the while–rotating
solids and/or liquids move down to an opening in the bottom of the conical section of the tube and
fall into a storage section beneath the cyclone tube section. The clean gas rises through small
diameter vortex finder riser tubes, which centered in the lower cone and exits from the cyclone.

5.0 Receiving, Handling & Inspection:

Inspect the Vertical liquid separator after unpacking for damage incurred during transit. Report any
damage to Flash Point immediately.

If the Vertical liquid separator is not to be installed immediately, store indoors in a clean and dry
environment. Ensure that the rated pressure and temperature mentioned on the vertical liquid
separator name-plate (Fig.2.1) is not less than the maximum pressure and temperature of the
installation.

Large sized Vertical liquid separator is provided with inspection holes. If the Inspection opening of
Vertical Liquid separator is equipped with a SEG4LOCK-H QOC, before attempting to open the
QOC. Please ensure to read the procedure detailed out in O&M manual of SEG4LOCK Quick
Opening Closure. (Document Number: SEG4LOCK-H). If inspection holes are provided with
bolted cover, it can remove by loosening the fasteners

6.0 Installation:

After completing the inspection of the received Vertical liquid separator, it can be moved to the
point of installation. The Vertical liquid separator should be lifted by hooks inserted onto the lifting
lugs provided on the Vertical liquid separator body.

The Vertical liquid separator should under NO condition is operated in excess of design condition
listed on the name. The Vertical liquid separator should be fitted in the space earmarked after
ascertaining that it is sufficiently accessible for subsequent maintenance operations, etc.

The Vertical liquid separator is provided with sturdy supports (skirt or angle legs). The Vertical
Liquid separator should be securely bolted to a structural or civil support using foundation bolts.
Inlet and outlet piping may be connected after the Vertical liquid separator is secured to the
foundation.

While fitting the Vertical liquid separator into a piping, take care not to cause stress to the body /
nozzle of the Vertical liquid separator. Support the Vertical liquid separator rigidly on a fabricated
or curl foundation by anchor bolts fixed to the base plate of the Vertical liquid separator.

Install auxiliary equipment, such as gauge glasses, liquid level controls, high level shutdown and
high level alarm, as required. Proper drainage of the Separator is essential for proper operation.
Connect the drain to a drain line or whatever mechanism you intend to use in order to remove the
separated liquids from the separator.

If a liquid level control is utilized, set the maximum liquid level below the upper gauge glass
connection. If no liquid level control is utilized, the liquid level must be maintained below the upper
gauge glass connection manually to insure efficient separation.

Once the Vertical liquid separator is installed, it needs no other action by the operator. The
separator is complete in it and will function whenever there is flow through.

If possible an initial check of differential pressure across the separator should be made and recorded
at the design flow rate. If over time a decrease in performance of the separator is noticed another
differential pressure reading at design flow rate should be made to help diagnose the problem and
take remedial measures.

If there is any doubt about the amount of liquid removal, it is recommended that you check the
liquid dumping system for correct operation and if necessary bypass this system to ensure that the
liquid is being removed correctly.

7.0 Operation

As gas containing liquid or dust enters the Vane-type demister of Second Stage, it is forced to
change direction in many times in passing through the multiple passages of the vane array. The
momentum of larger droplet keep them travelling in straight path & impinge on the vane surfaces
and adhering to it. As captured droplets are merge until heavy enough to drain they are readily
stripped out by the second stage vane separator, draining to the bottom of the vessel, through the
down comers of the vane separator into the liquid sump.

8.0 Maintenance:

8.1 General information

All work must be carried out by a suitably competent person. Before starting work ensure that
suitable tools are available. Use only Flash Point replacement parts Before attempting maintenance
operation it is important to ascertain that that the Filter has been completely isolated from upstream
and downstream pressure and that the pressure has been completely relieved and the Gas drained
out, by opening drain & vent valves. Ensure that these valves are not leak, Install spectacle blind in
such installation where any leakage could be potentially dangerous.

8.2 SEG4LOCK-QOC Closure Unlocking & Opening

Please refer carefully to the O&M Manual of SEG4LOCK QOC. (Doc No: SEG4LOCK-H)

8.3 Maintenance of Cyclone

Due to its design, the FPVS-SH vertical liquid separator requires little or no maintenance. These
units have no moving parts that require replacement. Once the Separator has been placed in
service, no other maintenance is required other than normal maintenance required to protect the
outside of the vessel from deterioration caused by corrosion. The vane pack and diffuser box of
Vertical liquid separator’ are manufactured from corrosion resistant stainless steel and designed to
last through the normal lifetime of the vessel.

Please refer carefully to the O&M Manual of SEG4LOCK QOC. (Doc No: SEG4LOCK-H).

8.5 Maintenance of SEG4LOCK-QOC

The SEG4LOCK closure is designed such that only minimal maintenance is required that can be
performed by one person with minimum effort and downtime. On a regular course basis the
following procedure is recommended to be followed.

Clean the locking segment ring and the QOC door contact faces for grease and accumulated debris.
Also take care to clean any collected debris from the inner surface of the segment ring. Any heavy
accumulations and surface corrosion that may have encrusted can be removed by hand sanding the
affected areas with medium grade emery paper.

Smear a light coating of molycote Grease to the sealing and mating faces for protection from
corrosion. Grease studs with molycote grease.

8.6 Recommended Tools for Maintenance

1. Ring Spanner. 2. Hammer 1 Kg. 3. Nose Pliers

4. Allen Key. 5. Molycote Grease
