5. A ball is thrown vertically upward direction. Then which of the following will represent correct
relation between its linear momentum and height
JEE MAIN 9 APRIL 2019 SHIFT-1 PHYSICS

(A)

(B)

(C)

(D)

Solution: (A)

If the ball was thrown with initial velocity 𝑢 then its velocity at height ′ℎ′ can be written as.

𝑣 = √𝑢2 − 2𝑔ℎ

Its linear momentum 𝑝 = 𝑚𝑣 = 𝑚√𝑢2 − 2𝑔ℎ

Or 𝑝2 = 𝑚2 𝑢2 − 2𝑚2 𝑔ℎ

The graph between 𝑝 & ℎ will be a parabola.

In motion when particle was going up its velocity is positive and decreasing with height so is the linear
momentum. When it reaches the maximum height the linear moment will be zero again. It will starts to
fall back this time the linear momentum will increase but have a negative value.

So is correct.
