Abstract

This paper outlines my professional goals for the next five years. It includes classes,

seminars, conferences (and rationale) that I will participate in continuing my education as well as

mastery of becoming a teacher. I hope to expand my toolbox so that I have differentiated

teaching strategies to help meet the diverse needs of the students in my class that will enable me

to present engaging academic content. This timeline that I am presenting will help keep me

focused on short- and long-term goals, and continuing my passion of being a lifetime learner.

Looking Forward

5-Year Professional Development Plan

A Professional Development Plan demonstrates my commitment to continue my

professional growth in the beginning years in pursuing my career of becoming a teacher. It is

also a requirement for all teachers in one form or another to further their education to enhance

their teaching skills and classroom environment.

Putting a plan together for the next five years was an eye-opening assignment for

me. Seeing my short- and long-term goals made it seem so much more tangible. Teaching I feel

is a constant work in progress. Expanding past our comfort zone, self-reflection, documenting

our achievements and having a timeline of what I want to accomplish is an aid to getting

there. The timeline may change as the years progress but writing down the plans for five years

helps me envision an overall view of my future and what I need to achieve to continue moving

forward and better myself as a teacher and person. It is a commitment to myself. It is a tool to

help never lose sight of what I am working towards.

Timeline

DOMAIN F – LOOKING FORWARD 4

Year 2  Continue 2nd year Induction Program.

 Go to National ISTE Convention in Palm Springs
2020-2021  Work one night a week at adult school for English Language Learners

Year 3  Find Personal Development Conferences that apply at the time

 Begin classes at UCLA for my doctorate in Psychology.
2021-2022  ISTE Conference to learn updates on technology

Year 4  Continue classes for my doctorate

 Find conference on Leadership
2022-2023

Year 5  Finish doctorate

 Take CSET for Administration
2023-2024

Rationale

Year 1 -

1. As I have just recently finished my multi-subject credential and need to begin the

Induction Program so that I am able to clear the credential within the given 5 years

allowed.

2. The Summer Conference on Education is also known as the ASCD Conference. It

promotes teaching excellence exhibiting the best and latest teaching instructional

programs.
DOMAIN F – LOOKING FORWARD 5

3. Our district offers many intervention programs that I will be able to take. The program

that is being offered now is the Positive Behavior Intervention and Support. This

program instructs teachers how to focus on positive behavior and not on the negative. It

helps teachers learn ways of ignoring poor behavior.

Year 2 -

1. The Induction program to clear a teaching credential takes a total of two years which I

need to complete in order to receive a clear credential for teaching.

2. The ISTE Conference is held every year. Next year’s 2020 conference will be held in

Anaheim. This conference is where educator tested strategies and skills come together

with already proven resources to help transform learning and teaching. It is a showcase

of new technology, and how to network with them all year long to stay abreast of new

tools available.

3. Teaching ELL at adult school helps me give back to the community and a lot of my

students that I have during the day parent’s take this class at night. I feel that this will

bridge communications and help me to diversify my teaching lessons more effectively.

“Thus teachers must cultivate deeper understandings of how culture is implicated in

teaching and learning…” (Banks & Banks, 2016, p. 76).

Year 3 -

1. I would attend a CTA (California Teachers Association) Conference that is offered on a

yearly basis. These conferences provide various seminars that provide knowledge, skills,

and information from the best content experts in public education. “Develop and

implement creative activities in the classroom…In order to motivate student learning and

create and open and exciting learning environment” (Constantino, 2009, p. 90).
DOMAIN F – LOOKING FORWARD 6

2. I will be starting my doctorate program at UCLA for Psychology to better understand the

human mind and how it learns and processes. This will enable me to assist children in

alleviating the tremendous amount of stress that they are dealing with in today’s world.

3. Attend ISTE conference to see if there are new ways to protect students on the internet

and additional skills they need to learn through technology. “The International Society

for Technology in Education “ISTE” has crafted a description for a model digital-age

citizen through the ISTE standards for students” (Hamilton, 2015, p. 21).

Year 4 -

1. I will still be attending UCLA to continue my doctorate in Psychology so I may further

help students alleviate stress.

2. I would attend a CTA (California Teachers Association) Conference and attend seminars

to learn leadership skills and professional development to see if I want to pursue my

career in administration.

Year 5 -

1. It is necessary to pass the CSET for Administration which measures knowledge and skills

in relation to an establish standard. This would allow me to see if this is a path which I

would choose to take next in my professional growth.

2. I will complete my courses at UCLA in Psychology to expand my understanding of

learning, emotions, and interaction of human relationships (students). This will allow me

more support in helping my students become successful.
