Lab 2: VoIP Network

Aim:
• To implement a long distance VoIP network
• To observe MOS value of VoIP services.

Steps:

1. Start a new project: File-> New -> Project -> VoIP, Low_Drop -> create empty
scenario -> Choose from maps -> Australia -> internet_toolbox -> Finish.

2. From internet_toolbox object palette select three subnets (one at Perth, one at
Brisbane and the other at Tasmania), one IP cloud, application config and profile
config.
3. Rename the subnet at Perth as West, the subnet at Brisbane as East and the one at
Tasmania as Tasman.
4. Right click on the application profile and define a VoIP application..

5. Right click on the profile definition and define a VoIP_Prof for the VoIP application.
6. Double click on the west subnet and you will get an empty workspace. From
internet_toolbox palette, select one Ethernet_server, one ethernet4_slip8_gtwy and
connect them with a bidirectional 100_BaseT link.

7. Right click on the Server_West, edit attributes-> application -> application supported
profile -> VoIP_Prof, application supported servies-> all . Assign server_west to the
server address attribute.
8. Click on to return to your project workspace.

9. Double click on the East subnet and drag one ethernet_wkstn (Client_East), one
ethernet4_slip8_gtwy and connect them through a 100_BaseT link.
10. Right click on the Client_East, edit attributes-> application -> application supported
profile -> VoIP_Prof, application supported servies-> All . Assign Client_East to the
address attribute.

11. Click on to return to your project workspace.

12. Repeat Step 9 and 10 to design a network for Tasman subnet.

13. Click on to return to your project workspace.

14. Use PPP_DS3 links to connect East subnet to the IP cloud, West subnet to the IP
cloud and Tasman subnet to IP cloud. Make sure to select the routers (gateway) in the
pop up dialog box.

15. Right click on IP cloud -> Performance Metrics -> packet discard ratio -> 0.5%.

16. Go to DES-> Choose individual statistics -> Node statistics -> voice application ->
MOS value, packet end to end delay, traffic sent (bytes), traffic received (bytes).

17. Configure the simulation time for 10 minutes run. Do not run the simulation at this
stage.

18. Duplicate the scenario and give it a name Drop_Moderate. Right click on IP cloud ->
Performance Metrics -> packet discard ratio -> 5%.

19. Duplicate the scenario once more and give it a name Drop_High. Right click on IP
cloud -> Performance Metrics -> packet discard ratio -> 10%.

20. Go to scenarios menu -> manage scenarios -> change results column to <collect>.

21. Click OK and run the simulation.

Report:

1. What happens to the MOS value if the IP cloud discards more packets? Discuss your
observations.
2. What is a MOS value? Why does it change when the packet discard ratio is increased?
3. How can we improve MOS value for VoIP?

Please submit a report by week 9, Sem 2.
