CHAPTER 2

RESEARCH METHODOLOGY

This chapter describes the research method, respondents, instruments,

statistical treatment of data, and the setting of the study.

Research Method

Descriptive-survey research design, used in this study, are procedures in

quantitative research in which investigators administer a survey to a sample or to the

entire population of people in order to describe the attitudes, opinions, behaviors or

characteristics of the population. In this procedure, survey researchers collect

quantitative, numbered data using survey questionnaire and statistically analyze the

data to describe trends about responses to questions and to test research questions. The

researchers then interpret the meaning of the data by relating results of the statistical

test (Cole, 2017). Based on the scope of research design presented, the method is

appropriate in the study undertaken by the researchers that aims in knowing the lived-

experience towards alcohol among the college students of Surigao Education Center.

Research Respondents

The respondents of the study were 323 college students. Stratified random

sampling is used in identifying respondents in this study. Stratified random sampling

is used in selecting a sample when the population is segmented into differentiated

groups or sections (Calderon, 2000) – in which in this study pertains to the different

colleges where the students belonged. It intends to guarantee that the general sample

represents specific sub groups (colleges) out of the whole population

(researchmethodology.net). Out of 1092 college students of SEC, the researchers got a

sample size of 323 to be the respondents of the study. The researchers give survey

questionnaires base on the class list of each colleges, randomly, present in the first

semester of the academic year 2018-2019. The number of respondents by different

colleges can be seen in the table below:

Table 2.1 Number of Respondents per College

College Frequency Count Percentage

CIT 5 1.71%
CTE 15 5.12%
CAMS 35 11.95%
CBE 67 22.87%
CME 108 36.86%
CEA 63 21.50%
Total 293 100%

Research Setting

The study will be conducted in Surigao Education Center which is located in

Km 2, Barangay Luna, Surigao City. The institution is divided in various colleges -

College of Teaching Education, College of Information Technology, College of

Engineering and Architecture, College of Applied Medical Sciences, College of

Business Education, and College of Maritime Education (SEC Handbook 2014).

Randomly and systematically, students will be chosen from the latter said colleges

and, therefore, considered as the respondents of the study.

Research Instruments

The instrument used in this study is adopted, from College Alcohol Study of

Harvard School of Public Health by Henry Wechsler (2005) and The Student Alcohol

Questionnaire of Indiana University by Ruth C. Engs (2007), collaborated and

modified by the researchers to fit in this study. The data needed in this study will be

gathered through the survey-questionnaire. The questionnaire constitutes two parts:

the (1) demographic profile of the respondents, and (2) lived-experiences of the

college students towards alcohol. The first part of the questionnaire need the

respondents to write the answer directly or choose from the presented choices. The

second part of the questionnaire is composed of different types of questions – (a)

close-ended questions, includes multiple choices and yes-or-no questions, which let

the respondents check the answer that best apply to them, and (b) open-ended

questions which let the respondents answer the questions in the space provided. The

questionnaire of the research will be validated by the research adviser and the research

panels. The researchers will consult and obtain the approval of the research adviser

regarding the preparation and contents of the questionnaire prior to use.

Data Collection Process

The whole study will be conducted within the bounds of Surigao Education

Center. Prior to the collection of data, the researchers will send a letter of request to

the College Dean, for the approval to conduct the research and to extract information

in their respective college, signed by the research instructor and adviser. Students

receive the questionnaire in their vacant time from the researchers and finished it right

away in order to directly get the data from the respondents. A paper-based survey

questionnaire collect data from SEC undergraduate college students.

Statistical Treatment

After administering the questionnaires, the researcher will tabulate the data

from the survey questionnaires. To determine the demographic profile and lived-

experience of the respondents, frequency tabulation and mean will be used.

When grouped according to the demographic variables of the study, Kruskal

Wallis test was run to determine the significant difference of the response of the

respondents due to the non-normality of the data.
