Junior Certificate Course in English, 2019-20

Course Requirements

Junior Certificate Course in English at the Institute of Modern Languages is designed for the
students who have seccessfully passed the admission test administered by the same
institution. It is a pre-intermediate course. The duration of the course is 120 contact hours for
two days a week (two hours per class). There are two sessional tests and a final examination
at the end of the course. The first sessional test is administered after 40 hours of teaching and
the second sessional test after 80 hours of teaching. The final examination is held after
completion of 120 hours of teaching.

Aims:
The course aims to enable the students to:
 Listen to pre-intermdiate level audio output to understand hard-to-pronounce words,
simple sentences, identify syllable stress, unpronounced volwes, consonant clusters,
rhythm, pitch and reduction of some words in varoius contexts and modalitites.
 Use and understand relatively preintermediate level English spoken in various kinds
of social and professional situation including functions like introducing, exchanging
information, talking about transport, comparing and contrasting, expressing wishes,
talking about food, vacation plans, describing abilities & skills and objects & places,
requesting, giving advices etc.
 Read and understand pre-intermedate level texts in English, belonging to difffernt
genres on different topics (from general to academic) and different modalities
 Write different types of texts including paragraphs, emails, recipes, cover letter, movie
reviews etc. to fulfill various types of communicative needs with an acceptable
amount of accuracy.
 Develop accuracy in grammar inclusing items like tense, gerand, infinitve, participle,
conditionals, simple passivization, modals, reported speech etc.

Examinations
Students will have to take three exams at the apointed time. No make-up examination will be
administered for any test missed.
Breakdown of the marks of the examination will be as follows:
Total Marks:300
Paper I: Reading (60)+ Listening (30)=100 Marks
Paper II: Writing (60) + Grammar (40)=100 Marks
Paper III: Sessional Tests (25+25)+ Speaking Test (40) + Class Performance and attendance
(10)=100 Marks

Requirements for the successful completion of the course:


Regular attendance is a requirement of the course. Students who are absent more than three
consecutive days will not be allowed to continue with the course. At least 75% attendance is
required to take the final exaination 60-74% attendance is non-collegiate, i.e. students are
allowed to take examination only after paying a fine. Students having less than 60%
attendance will not be allowed to take examination.
Grading System
The final grade will be the average percentage of all three examinations. However, students
will have to pass each paper individually. Minimum pass mark is 40% in each paper.
