● Descriptive Narrative: I have always played sports whether it be basketball at the local

YMCA or wrestling at my high school. Playing sports at higher levels such as high

school require training whether it be running or lifting. This physical activity is

something I try to do between my classes in order to relax. When I was thinking about

what I should pick for my inquiry question, I had two important tests in chemistry and

biology that same day. I studied for hours and hours but I needed to relax so I headed to

belk gym on campus and played basketball for an hour before my test. I feel like this

activity and really activity as a whole helps people relax.

● Brief History/Context: Exercise has been around for a very long time, however the first

important date is when the first YMCA was built in 1853. The YMCA is a place where

people can form a community and either play basketball, run, swim, lift, or do yoga.

These activities help people relax and that is why these places draw in thousands of

people each year. Within the past decade, gyms have started to develop on college

campuses as the colleges are beginning to realize how much of an impact exercise has on

students. At UNCC, we have 2 gyms and a 3rd one is currently being built, which is

beneficial for all the students here. These colleges are realizing that the students putting

in work and effort in a different thing other that school helps them succeed.
● What did I know before I began: As I stated before I have first hand experience with

activity helping people relax, so I started off with a solid base. I also knew a lot about this

topic because of one of the articles we read covered the exact same topic that I chose. I

learned from this article that even walking can help calm someone’s nerves a little bit. I

have also seen that a majority of students agree with me because Belk gym is crowded in

the times from 1-4 which is usually a break time for most students.

● Evidence that it is researchable: Harvard medical school posted an article saying how

exercise is a form of physical stress and physical stress can help relieve mental stress. Pro

health advisor also states that “regular aerobic exercise will bring remarkable changes to

your body, your metabolism, your heart, and your spirits” (pro health advisor.com).

These are two very credible sources just from searching on google, this topic is very well

researched and many sources agree with me when I say any sort of activity relieves

stress.

● Keyword/Subject Leaders; Some related words for more inquiry include activity, stress,

physical, and relief. These words are very close to synonyms to what I am trying to

convey in my inquiry question. Physical activity helps relieve stress is the synonym

question I formed which is very similar to my real inquiry question which is how does

exercise help benefit college students.

● New perspectives: I am going to focus on the relieving stress part of my question but I

could also add how exercise adds social benefit by forming a community among college

students. Another perspective is how these activities help improve your work ethic
because exercise is a thing that doesn’t show results right away. It is something that a

person must work at constantly in order to get to a desired goal.

● Limiting in terms of geography, time, and population: I want to limit my question to

college students because I see the benefits of exercise happen first hand. I have met many

new people from playing basketball very often and I am also less stressed heading into

the rest of the day so it is a win-win for me. I am going to not limit to just UNCC as it

would be too specific and not enough research would be shown.

● Specific questions: One question I have is how much do I want to focus on certain topics

or do I want to write equally about all the subjects. This same question could be applied

for sources in should I use the same source for one topic or find multiple reports for the

same topic.

● Importance of my topic: My topic will hopefully show students that if they are

experiencing stress or feel left out then they can come to the gym form a community and

relax a little. I think that most people think exercise just gets you sweaty and takes a long

time to do but after a while exercise becomes like a second nature and will be fun to do. I

am very passionate about this topic because it has benefited me severely so far in college.
Reflection- I thought this process went very well, as I learned a lot of what to do better and hope

my writing is much improved.
