Les adjectifs - Day 1

Grade 7 Core French

Today’s Learning Goals
★ By the end of class today, I will understand what an
adjective is and how to properly place an adjective in a
sentence when writing in French.
What is an adjective?
An adjective is a word that describes a noun.

What is a noun?
If we were to describe a person, we
❏ A person may say “a smart boy.” Today, we
❏ A place are going to learn how to add
❏ A thing adjectives to nouns in French!
Adjectives in English
In English, we put adjectives before the noun they are
describing.

We would say “a purple coat” or “a yellow garage.”

Adjectives in French
In French, it is the opposite. Most adjectives are placed after
the noun they are describing.

We would say “un manteau violet” (which literally means: a

coat purple) or “un garage jaune” (which literally means: a
garage yellow).
Un fantôme blanc

Let’s practice!
How do you think we would say… Un citrouille orange

“A white ghost”

“An orange pumpkin”

Une sorcière aux cheveux noirs
A witch with “black hair”

Before we begin, let’s review!
NOUN
An adjective is a descriptive word we use to describe a ______.

* Remember, in
What is a noun?
French the adjective
A person

used to describe the
noun is placed
❏ A place AFTER the noun.

❏ A thing
What is one unique word we may use to describe each photo?
Ex: une ville bruyante.
A _____ city.

Ex: un crayon violet.

A _____ crayon.

A _____ boy.
Ex: un garcon intelligent.

WELL DONE! NOW… IF WE CAN USE ADJECTIVES IN ENGLISH,

WE CAN LEARN HOW TO USE ADJECTIVES IN FRENCH :)
Activité: Which adjective does not match the noun it is
describing?
Masculin et Feminin
In French, when we are using an adjective to describe a noun, we need to make
sure the adjective is masculine or feminine depending on the noun.

For example, we may say “Il est intelligent” (He is smart) or “Elle est intelligente”
(She is smart).

Notice how we added an ‘e’ when talking about a girl. Depending on the
adjective, we add certain letters to make the adjective feminine.
Petit →
Grand →
Let’s practice! Fatigué →
What would the feminine
adjective be for the French
Bleu →
adjectives listed here?
Joli →
Activité: Comment décris-tu? - Name Bingo
For the next 10 minutes, you will circulate the class and ask your peers how they
would describe themselves.

I have provided the English definition below each adjective to help you.

You must write only one name beside each adjective.

You can’t ask the same person twice.

Circle the appropriate adjective (fem. or masc.

depending on the name of person you’re asking!)

* If you’re the first one to finish, say “BINGO!”

Les adjectifs - Day 3 & 4
Grade 7 Core French
Today’s Learning Goals
★ By the end of class today, I will understand there are
singular and plural ways to write and match adjectives
with their nouns.
Les adjectifs au pluriel
In French, when we are using an adjective to describe a noun, we need to not
only make sure the adjective is masculine or feminine depending on the noun,
but that it is also singular or plural depending on the noun.

For example, we may say “Il a un grand chien” (He has a big dog) or “Il a des
grands chiens” (He has big dogs).

Notice how we added an ‘s’ to both the adjective and the noun when
talking about more than one dog? Depending on the adjective, we must
add certain letters to make the
adjective plural.
Please copy
down this chart:
This chart provides some
good examples of
adjectives we may use to
describe a masculine,
feminine, singular, or
plural noun.
Complete the exercise booklet I have
created for you.

Today’s Learning Goals
★ By the end of class today, I will understand there are
exceptions when placing adjectives in a sentence in
French.
Exceptions
Sometimes, there are French adjectives that do come before the noun they are
describing. In order to help us remember which adjectives we place before the
noun, we can use the saying ‘BANGS.’

· Beauty
· Age
· Number
· Goodness
· Size

Most adjectives expressing these (BANGS adjectives) are placed

before the noun they describe.
Let’s take a closer look!
‘BANGS’ examples:

Une belle femme (a beautiful woman) - beauty here comes

before the noun

Un vieil homme (an old man) - age here comes before the noun

Un gros sandwich (a big sandwich) - size here comes before the

noun
Please create:

1 sentence to describe the beauty of a

celebrity

Today’s task: 1 sentence to describe the age of your

younger or older sibling/cousin

1 sentence to describe how many

classmates you have

1 sentence to describe how good/nice

your friend is

1 sentence to describe your height
