This magazine article examines generational poverty and what people are doing to solve the

problem. The authors in this article do not debate whether or not someone can escape poverty

within three generations. However, they do give you background on poverty and what they are

doing to try and stop generational poverty. They talk about what causes generational poverty

within families. The authors stress education as a key factor in poverty. They talk about an

organization known as The Annie E. Casey Foundation. The AECF is the program that is trying

to implement the two-generational approach. They are trying to help at risk children and families

all around the United States. The biggest question that is approached in this article is whether or

not this new two generational approach can be the solution to generational poverty. There have

been other efforts by different organizations in the past but none have been successful thus far.

This new program allows parents to register with the career-development center to develop their

job skills while the kids get free education through pre-K. This allows parents to work towards

better jobs instead of taking care of the kids all day. This article provides an overview of what

people are trying to do to solve the problem of generational poverty. It is aimed toward people

who are willing to help in the community. It is not a biased piece, but instead it is more

informational and inspiring. It makes people want to get involved and help at risk families and

children. The author of this article, Alana Semuels, has a Bachelor of Arts in American History

and Literature from Harvard University. Alana Semuels is now a journalist for ​The Atlantic.

Within this article she showed why this two generational program is going to work even though

all the others failed in the past. She also provided us with factors contributing to generational

poverty. I will be using this source throughout the rest of the semester because it provides good
 base knowledge of how people are trying to help. This is a great article to use for my research

now and in the future. It has allowed me to get a better understanding of the two generational

approach to stopping poverty, and how education affects those people in poverty.

Poverty is everywhere you look. It is in the suburbs, rural areas, and urban areas. Every country is

affected by the likes of poverty. This peer-reviewed article researches generational poverty in

Spain. However, almost all of the information in this article can relate to poverty all over the

globe. This article is focused primarily on how to escape poverty through education. The article

states, “poverty in childhood

increases the chances of poverty in adulthood.” This tells me that generational poverty occurs

everywhere. The author also states that Spain is no different from everywhere else when it comes

to poverty. This text really stresses the fact that education is one of the biggest roles within

generational poverty. One of the biggest arguments in this article is whether or not having a

secondary education will help you escape poverty. Secondary education is also known as high

school. Roughly 51 percent of the people that live in Spain received a secondary education. This

article concludes that, “The probability that the respondent has completed secondary education is

determined, although not exclusively, by the family conditions of the respondents when they were

teenagers.” This is interesting in regards to poverty because it tells us that family plays a huge

role in an adolescents life. They are influenced by the people around them, and this can help them

escape poverty or make it worse. This article provides a very good summary for some of the

factors that lead to poverty. The study that they used throughout the article provided evidence and
 proof of generational poverty, and why it happens. This text is directed towards scholars,

students, and anyone else who wants to know more about generational poverty. This piece of

writing is informative or expository. This text is not one sided, and that is why I love it. It allows

me to get information that I need in a neutral way. It does not influence my opinion on the matter

in either direction. All three of the authors of this paper are professors at Zaragoza University in

Spain. They all do research in the field of economics which is a great background to have for this

particular article. I will use this text to help me with my research in the future. It provides a great

overview of poverty and some reasons as to why it happens.

The National Center for Children in Poverty is an organization that conducts research and assist

children that are living in poverty. They have many articles on their reliable website about

poverty and the article I want to focus on is about intergenerational poverty. This article provides

an extreme amount of data on generational poverty. It also discusses the factors that contribute to

the problem. Some of the factors include education/employment opportunities, how much the

child is around poverty, role models, and race. This article provides many studies that have been

conducted to help back up their information. One study shows that African-Americans have about

a 42 percent chance to remain in poverty. On the other hand, whites only have about a 17 percent

chance to stay within the poverty cycle. 65 percent of children never experience poverty in the

United States. 75 percent of white children never experience poverty, while less than 33 percent

of African-Americans never experience it. These facts helped me understand how terrible this

situation is. Poverty has always been an issue in the world, and this article will help open people’s

eyes. These authors write about the factors of poverty. Then they provide examples and evidence
to back up what they are saying. The article then transitions into the possible consequences of

growing up poor. The largest consequence that comes with growing up poor is that you have

almost no chance to make it out of the poverty cycle. This article does not give an description on

how to help the situation. Rather, it provides a substantial amount of facts on poverty. It provides

a lot of numbers and statistics to add credibility and context to this article. This is a reliable

website that was made by an organization that is trying to stop poverty. This article was intended

for anyone who is interested in poverty and wants to know facts about it. This text shows many

statistics to back up their findings, However, it doesn’t provide any solutions. The article from

The Atlantic​ showed a way to stop poverty and also provided some informative facts. The

authors, Robert Lee Wagmiller and Robert M. Adelman, are both professors of Sociology at

Buffalo University. The authors used several sources and they are listed at the bottom of the

article. Overall I would recommend this article to anyone who is studying poverty. I will use this

source in future research to give me more facts when I need them.
