1 Content Presentation Oscillation is the repetitive variation, typically in time, of some
measure about a central value (often a point of equilibrium) or
between two or more different states. The term vibration is
precisely used to describe mechanical oscillation. Familiar
examples of oscillation include a
swinging pendulum and alternating current.

Free Harmonic Oscillations

In the ideal case (neglecting air resistance and friction), such a
system will perform undamped harmonic oscillations, in which
the displacement x is described by the cosine or sine function .

x(t)=Acos(ωt+φ0) or

x(t)=Asin(ωt+φ0)

In these formulas, A means the amplitude of

oscillation, ωt+φ0 is the phase of oscillation, φ0 is the initial
phase at time t=0.
In the case of a mass on a spring, the restoring force for small
oscillations obeys Hooke’s law:
F=−kx,

LER - 1
where k is the stiffness of the spring. Here the coordinate x=0
corresponds to the point of equilibrium, in which the force of
gravity is balanced by the initial tension of the spring. Then,
according to Newton’s second law, the movement of the mass
will be described by the differential equation
mx′′=−kx,⇒x′′+kmx=0

Oscillation of Liquid in U Tube

If a liquid is taken in a U tube, it maintains equal level in both

the coloumns of the tube.
