INTRODUCTION

1.1. Background of Research

A social interaction is an exchange between two or more individuals and

is a building block of society. Social interaction can be studied between groups of
two, three or larger social groups.
By interacting with one another, people design rules, institutions and
systems within which they seek to live. Symbols are used to communicate the
expectations of a given society to those new to it. In social environment, people
are usually distinguish themselves into social class.
A social class is a large group of people who occupy a similar position in
an economic system. There are several different dimensions of social class,
including income, wealth, power, occupation, education, race, ethnicity.

With symbolic interactionism, reality is seen as social, developed
interaction with others. Ethnomethodology questions how people’s interactions
can create the illusion of a shared social order despite not understanding each
other fully and having differing perspectives.

The writer found that in her social environment there is an example of

inequality in gender, and also these day women start to give a voice about their
thoughts of gender equality.
The writer choose “Collette” movie to be analyzed as a thesis for her
work. The writer would like to analyze based on the gender equality inside the
story. The writer found that this topic is important to share and interesting to
discuss, and also the case of inequality gender still happening in social
environment.
. With all the reasons above the writer chooses the title GENDER
EQUALITY AND FEMINISM PERSPECTIVE OF MAIN CHARACTER
IN COLLETTE BY WASH WESTMORELAND

1.2. Scope of Limitation

 The target of this study is the writer will analyze and explain about gender
equality and feminism in the movie. This research only focused on the struggle of a
woman used by Gabrielle Collette characters in the movie “Collette”. The writer
analyzed the kinds of women’s struggle using gender equality theory and feminism
perspective and how main character struggles to get her live to be better.

The goal of this research are to know the struggle of women who fight for gender
equality in the social environment, and also to understand what is the meaning of
feminism perspective. The struggle that played the main character in the fight for life,
the reader is able to understand what gender equality is, and to show that women and
men has the same rights.
The function of this research are the writer hope that this research being useful
for the student and the readers. This research can help them to have comprehension
about gender equality and feminism perspective, and to explain that it is important to
know how gender equality is important to be implemented in social environment.
